So old /prog/ is finally dead

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-07 14:54

http://blog.4chan.org/post/81998248943/goodbye-to-some-old-friends
Over the past 10 years, 4chan has accumulated many features and side-projects, but since the team has rarely consisted of more than myself, a single volunteer developer, and a handful of volunteer moderators, many have been neglected. Specifically the discussion boards (dis.4chan.org) and Fileshares board (rs.4chan.org).[br]Rather than continue to neglect these side-projects, we’ve decided to sunset them so that we can focus our time and energy into maintaining and improving the core of the site—4chan’s image boards.
So it's finally over. All we have left is this shithole. I feel like killing myself.

For the VIPPERs and “expert programmers” among us this may be a sad day, however we hope to accommodate you with some future image board features. Stay tuned.
Haha, no, get fucked, faggot.

Yes, yes I am. Also a prof just unloaded a metric fuckton of research on me. Here's to never ending work!

Kareha is the board software to use, just uses a variant of markdown rather than BBCode.

I replied to moot once when the captcha-shit on /prog/ was broken.
He forwarded what I said to the email "mrvacbob@4chan.org".

No dice, BBCODE or bust.

would emailing mrvacbob help?

Wow, what a slap to the face, really.

and nobody ever cared about the other spam infested textreddits.
/newpol/ had some decent discussion going on it And /sjis/ and /vip/ were occasionally amusing with thoughtful discussion sometimes. /comp/ and /tech/ were kinda redundant, /food/ had a good thread pop up once in a rare while.

It looks like VacBob betrayed us. This was his response to my question. http://ask.fm/mrvacbob/answer/111468489368 (https://archive.is/6Ef5m)
This is my response to him (in case he doesn't answer it): http://pastebin.com/yMWK0mjQ (https://archive.is/Td8JY) I guess it's not surprising, moot's bullshit has now metastasized and infected VacBob too. I expected better from him, at least.

You could also try e-mailing him at astrange@ithinksw.com or his AIM sn: feanoraim Doubtful that anything will come from it. I'll try shooting moot an e-mail too, but it's probably a lost cause.

Did you know 4-ch.net is still up? That's a pretty good website, I think.

why do you do this? read/1373068543 links to the static .html file. adding /1- unnecessarily generates the page dynamically.

Sorry, won't do that again.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-09 2:01

Isn't it kind of weird that once the offshot board is made for the other large board on world4ch, moot shuts everything down? Are we incredibly lucky, or moot just really opportunist?

This board was made in response to captcha, which was regarded as a death sentence. Now the axe has fallen. Not much has changed. Rather than being inconvenient to post, it is no longer an option.

Now that old /prog/ has been murdered, we have the responsibility of carrying on /prog/ culture so that it can live into the future rather than becoming a forgotten relic of the past. I will increase my shit posting rate by 2x.

HAX MY ANUS

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-09 12:02

The old /prog/ was nothing but a cespool since 2012, almost only succesive spam of imageboard talk with the variation of a shitty spambot. There was nearly no talking of programming at all, it was sort of like trying to sift out small patches of gold from a river of diarreah.
Moot should have shutdown the place when he realized that nobody gave a crap about it, im glad of its long overdue death.

Dont think nobody appreciates what you did admin-sama, i certainly liked this board, but just had little to contribute.
Please dont shut it down just becuase some people badmouth you, i know its not very rewarding and motivating, but i think this place means alot to some of us. Im sure there is a silent majority that like this place and how you run it.
First neet.nu and now this, i hope textboard culture isnt dying for good. ;_;
If you do decide to shutdown this place, then i thank you for the time i could spend here and hope it doesnt leave a bad taste for you and id hope all of you here are going to find some other place to feel comfortable (except for the shitposters who ruined it, they should rot in the hell of the burned testicles).

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-09 13:27

Thanks for the positive responses, goyim.

No shitstorm has happened yet, which is unexpected. I wonder where all of world4ch's userbase has gone. Perhaps there weren't that many people posting there after all, or most of them didn't know about this place (hopefully).

I will ride it out and see what happens. I don't really want to kill off the site, but I don't want to see it turn into a pile of shit either.

I won't be deleting anything at all anymore from either board or banning anyone unless it's truly spam (i.e., complete garbage posts / same post everywhere all over the place). So have fun. I don't see myself appointing moderators in the foreseeable future, either.

Feel free to make threads on /lounge/ or reply on here if you have suggestions, I will look into switching board software or maybe making something myself. Need to write something to export these posts from raw HTML into an actual database first, though. If someone could make a script for that, it would be greatly appreciated, so that I don't have to waste my time doing it (modifying tablecat's thread presentation function and then partitioning the output is probably the easiest route).

This is probably the last post you'll see me make for a while.

P.S. I don't understand why some of you think I get some strange power trip from being the administrator of this place or that I'm somehow emotionally invested in the bullshit you end up posting. Most of the time I was acting according to general consensus, hosting a site like this is incredibly irritating, especially when you get spammed and are running on software that you have to code solutions to the spam in real time on top of a horrifying perl codebase that literally parses HTML with regex, all while everyone is shitting themselves complaining constantly expecting you to do everything while contributing nothing (your shitposts aren't a valid form of currency). There is no real personal benefit to hosting this site other than seeing /prog/ continue by proxy. Also, stop whining about Tor being banned, if you want it to be unbanned help develop something that counteracts spam without requiring constant moderation and that doesn't use IPs as a filter. Submit it. I will implement it and if it works I will unban Tor. This goes for any and all features you want, implement it and do most of the work and I'll integrate it, but please refrain from requesting / submitting anything that would just benefit your personal tastes, because I will not even respond.

I just wake up. I saw kike-admin-sama in my dream where he deleted all of my [i]legimate[/i] posts!

complete garbage posts
so, you will delete the hax my anus?

anyway, thank you. I wish /porg/rider will be as good as 2008-/prog/ (but with funny maymays)

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-09 14:24

>>107
No, complete garbage posts means unicode spam or what someone was doing a while ago, copy pasting random sections of the page / certain threads / posts and stringing them together and just flooding the board with them. In general as long as it wasn't automated it won't be deleted.

The short of it is I don't care anymore. I'm not going to patrol the board. Spam will be deleted because it is obvious and easy to pick up at least behaviorally (abnormal increase in the rate of posting, sustained rate well above normal levels, burst posting from disparate ranges, etc.) so I can have the server ``notify'' me if it happens and I will deal with it.

Beyond that I'm not deleting anything. I won't be on the site enough to catch most of it and so it would end up seeming like arbitrary / opinionated deletion. I'm not personally annoyed by any of it. You can filter things yourself using userscripts (or whatever) pretty easily if it's repetitive stuff that annoys you.

I'm not entirely sure how to parse that. As I said if you have suggestions you are free to post them here, or in lounge. Preferably keep it in one thread because I'll be more likely to come across it then if I know where to look.

Also I usually idle in the IRC in one way or another. You can just leave a message there and I'll eventually read it.

Anyone have VacBob's modified form of Shiichan? It was posted at http://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1325957099/7-8 but the file is deleted.

If we can't find it, we can always create scripts that will output the same html in between the dynamic content. Then it'll be like the same thing, except secure. Was the <> bug that leaked the poster's ip address ever fixed?

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-10 2:26

I remember the file was called "mrvacbob.7z", I'm sure some /prog/lodyte still has it.

I don't care about anything except the BBCode parser being 100% comparable. It's like COBOL, the code should never be changed; instead, the system should be designed around it, bugs and all.
