So old /prog/ is finally dead

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-07 14:54

http://blog.4chan.org/post/81998248943/goodbye-to-some-old-friends
Over the past 10 years, 4chan has accumulated many features and side-projects, but since the team has rarely consisted of more than myself, a single volunteer developer, and a handful of volunteer moderators, many have been neglected. Specifically the discussion boards (dis.4chan.org) and Fileshares board (rs.4chan.org).[br]Rather than continue to neglect these side-projects, we’ve decided to sunset them so that we can focus our time and energy into maintaining and improving the core of the site—4chan’s image boards.
So it's finally over. All we have left is this shithole. I feel like killing myself.

For the VIPPERs and “expert programmers” among us this may be a sad day, however we hope to accommodate you with some future image board features. Stay tuned.
Haha, no, get fucked, faggot.

will the /prog/rider guy allow us to have our own unmoderated /prog/?

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-07 15:17

/prog/ was a shithole. I am glad it is gone.
Here is an excerpt from the anti-foreword to the Unix Hater's Handbook. It is written by Dennis Ritchie, and I feel it applies if one were to talk about /prog/, too.
Like excrement, it contains enough undigested nuggets of nutrition to sustain life for some. But it is not a tasty pie: it reeks too much of contempt and of envy.

Well, all good things must end sometime. But given what a forgetful idiot joot is, it'll probably stay up as long as he's there to suck 4chan dry. The `sunsetting' was probably the result of the dev's (probably not MrVacBob-kun-sama anymore) struggle to implement something as simple as stopping necroposting. As long as nothing is there to remind him about, it'll be fine.

For example, the original dev blog was up until just last year when.... when I made the foolish mistake of telling him that the CSS on it was broke. Then it was 403'd in a day. Luckily, I had the foresight to save a copy of it. It's not very useful though, but if anyone wants it....

/prog/ died long ago. The corpse has simply stopped moving because the mortician, tired of waiting, has duct-taped its extremities to the coffin walls.

Still, it had a good run.

I don't understand why you're offering an alternative to world4ch when you're posting on a completely valid alternative for world4ch's /prog/.

There's also Tablecat's Lounge, and nobody ever cared about the other spam infested textreddits.

/lang/ was an important place to redirect people, and /tech/ was slowly improving.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 1:16

What are you doing here then?

>>35
What do you mean by 95% false positive rate? The admin only deleted a few spam posts. Yes, banning all Tor nodes was stupid, but it's reasonable to be paranoid after the spam at world4ch.

I'm not the admin, so I wouldn't know if he has deleted some of your well-intentioned posts, but he has never deleted my shitposts.

It's such a shame /jp/ can't redirect anyone to /lang/ anymore. In the same way we redirect people to Reddit and Stack Overflow, they could redirect the weebs to http://japanese.stackexchange.com/.

So it's finally over. All we have left is this shithole. I feel like killing myself.

This site might not even be up for much longer. I have to decide whether I want to renew the registration for everything in a few months. I might not really, not like I'm getting much out of this other than being called a faggot constantly by imbeciles who have contributed nothing.

>>6
I haven't deleted anything in ages. I honestly have better things to do than look at this site. I haven't even logged into the admin panel in about 2 months.

>>9
It's not power, it was frustration in the beginning. Try hosting a site like this and you'll see.

>>35
It would be nice to have somewhere to go that had an admin who could figure out how to block spammers without managing a 95% false positive rate.

What are you even talking about? The ``spam-detection'' on here is incredibly simplistic and retarded because I hacked it together in like 15 minutes when we were getting spammed once. I've yet to see any actual poster get tripped up by it.

Anyway, this site might die soon as well. Then you can all cry in the corner without having a place left to whine in.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 5:08

okay then, since this site is going to die too what are our plans?
/g/ with vipper and hax my anus spam?

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 5:19

Actually, if I end up getting the full traffic of the old /prog/ here I'm fairly certain I'll end up just closing the site. If with just a fraction in the beginning there was so much hassle I can't imagine what kind of autistic turf wars will spawn as a result of world4ch going down completely.

I always just wanted a small site with a small textboard with a small, relaxed community. I probably should never even have posted as myself in the first place, that was a mistake. Too late now. I don't even know why you all seem to have made me your personal enemy, I'm just a two-bit programmer that wanted to give back a bit to the place I enjoyed browsing for years. I tried to keep the board clean and remove the stuff that plagued old /prog/ but no one's ever happy, especially with half of the old userbase thinking I was the one spamming it world4ch. If you didn't like it here there was nothing stopping you from hosting your own bbs.

Enjoy the remaining time on here. There's probably not much of it left.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 8:15

came here to post http://phrack.org/papers/fall_of_groups.html (interesting article btw), didn't even bother going to the old /prog/. now come to discover it's gone i'm kinda sad though. i spent years there ;_;

Great going, /prog/. You are given a Shiitchan-free alternative, one with a preview button, VIP quality posts, free of spam, free of captcha, and you keep calling the admin a faggot.

I fucking hate all of you for ruining a perfectly good thing.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 10:22

Maybe this will finally open up some community effort to put together a real, moderated, not-dead, 2ch style site. God knows, there are enough half-dead boards sprinkled throughout the internet.

What we need is a kind of confederation of text boards.

Personally, I find the internet too full of real, moderated things. That's why progrider is/was good, depending on how Admin feels. Not-dead? Well, I wouldn't mind more life, but not at certain costs.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 11:24

Admin-kun, what does it cost you to run this place and what would it cost with the traffic of old /prog/?

I might just throw up my old own bbs with this software. Anyway, I'm sorry for calling you a jew for not removing the site's javascript, but you really should have removed the javascript you fucking kike.

Also, I might just throw you some money every month to keep this place up.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-08 11:46

Sorry about the sad news. But it was going to come eventually. The text boards were a liability for moot. Too many spammers. People with the time, skill, and autistic motives to find vulnerabilities in the very buggy text board. And rs is a copyright liability.

if this site goes down we can discuss the next /prog/ at tablecat.ipyo.heliohost.org/lounge

Good night and good luck.

Money's not the issue. It doesn't take much to host this site. It's just text. I don't really want anyone's money, more than anything I'd need people to help manage things / development help? The problem is the possible hassles that come with hosting a community of this type. Look at what happened to moot. I really don't need that.

If there really aren't any major problems I'll keep the board going and think and maybe changing server / server software over time.

I just really don't have the time to keep behind at this site at this point in time, so if it becomes a thing where I need to check it like every 5 minutes to keep it functional, then I will have to think about retiring it.

Otherwise, we really need to switch out this board software. It is some of the most obtuse perl I've ever seen and far too simplistic, it lacks too many features, is very rigid in its implementation, and I hate writing perl. If anyone can recommend an alternative I'll look into it.

The old /prog/ was nothing but a cespool since 2012, almost only succesive spam of imageboard talk with the variation of a shitty spambot. There was nearly no talking of programming at all, it was sort of like trying to sift out small patches of gold from a river of diarreah.
Moot should have shutdown the place when he realized that nobody gave a crap about it, im glad of its long overdue death.

Dont think nobody appreciates what you did admin-sama, i certainly liked this board, but just had little to contribute.
Please dont shut it down just becuase some people badmouth you, i know its not very rewarding and motivating, but i think this place means alot to some of us. Im sure there is a silent majority that like this place and how you run it.
First neet.nu and now this, i hope textboard culture isnt dying for good. ;_;
If you do decide to shutdown this place, then i thank you for the time i could spend here and hope it doesnt leave a bad taste for you and id hope all of you here are going to find some other place to feel comfortable (except for the shitposters who ruined it, they should rot in the hell of the burned testicles).

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-09 13:27

Thanks for the positive responses, goyim.

No shitstorm has happened yet, which is unexpected. I wonder where all of world4ch's userbase has gone. Perhaps there weren't that many people posting there after all, or most of them didn't know about this place (hopefully).

I will ride it out and see what happens. I don't really want to kill off the site, but I don't want to see it turn into a pile of shit either.

I won't be deleting anything at all anymore from either board or banning anyone unless it's truly spam (i.e., complete garbage posts / same post everywhere all over the place). So have fun. I don't see myself appointing moderators in the foreseeable future, either.

Feel free to make threads on /lounge/ or reply on here if you have suggestions, I will look into switching board software or maybe making something myself. Need to write something to export these posts from raw HTML into an actual database first, though. If someone could make a script for that, it would be greatly appreciated, so that I don't have to waste my time doing it (modifying tablecat's thread presentation function and then partitioning the output is probably the easiest route).

This is probably the last post you'll see me make for a while.

P.S. I don't understand why some of you think I get some strange power trip from being the administrator of this place or that I'm somehow emotionally invested in the bullshit you end up posting. Most of the time I was acting according to general consensus, hosting a site like this is incredibly irritating, especially when you get spammed and are running on software that you have to code solutions to the spam in real time on top of a horrifying perl codebase that literally parses HTML with regex, all while everyone is shitting themselves complaining constantly expecting you to do everything while contributing nothing (your shitposts aren't a valid form of currency). There is no real personal benefit to hosting this site other than seeing /prog/ continue by proxy. Also, stop whining about Tor being banned, if you want it to be unbanned help develop something that counteracts spam without requiring constant moderation and that doesn't use IPs as a filter. Submit it. I will implement it and if it works I will unban Tor. This goes for any and all features you want, implement it and do most of the work and I'll integrate it, but please refrain from requesting / submitting anything that would just benefit your personal tastes, because I will not even respond.

No, complete garbage posts means unicode spam or what someone was doing a while ago, copy pasting random sections of the page / certain threads / posts and stringing them together and just flooding the board with them. In general as long as it wasn't automated it won't be deleted.

The short of it is I don't care anymore. I'm not going to patrol the board. Spam will be deleted because it is obvious and easy to pick up at least behaviorally (abnormal increase in the rate of posting, sustained rate well above normal levels, burst posting from disparate ranges, etc.) so I can have the server ``notify'' me if it happens and I will deal with it.

Beyond that I'm not deleting anything. I won't be on the site enough to catch most of it and so it would end up seeming like arbitrary / opinionated deletion. I'm not personally annoyed by any of it. You can filter things yourself using userscripts (or whatever) pretty easily if it's repetitive stuff that annoys you.

I'm not entirely sure how to parse that. As I said if you have suggestions you are free to post them here, or in lounge. Preferably keep it in one thread because I'll be more likely to come across it then if I know where to look.

Also I usually idle in the IRC in one way or another. You can just leave a message there and I'll eventually read it.

I don't care about anything except the BBCode parser being 100% comparable. It's like COBOL, the code should never be changed; instead, the system should be designed around it, bugs and all.

Unfortunately we don't have a live system to test against anymore. We'll have to reimplement the bbcode parse from memory. That and the over 1000 bugs. Shiitchat was quite an enigma.

There's a file inside the shii4chan.tar once you un7z this that's named ``shii4chan.tar.bz2'' but it's corrupted halfway through, so about a 900KB chunk is missing. Seems to only be the .dat files in the anime/ folder, though.

I only have the first 175 posts from the 1-GET thread for some reason (thread id is 1). Once I'm sure everything is there I'll upload it somewhere. Where do we upload things again? Does archive.org accept submissions?

I finally managed to scrape https://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1 maybe my http parser is fucked, but there were multiple points in that document where tags didn't match up. At some points, the extra starting tags had to be dropped. At other points, the extra ending tags had to be ignored. I eventually parsed the whole thing by making the parser non deterministic in these cases and repeatedly parsing the document until 2948 posts were recovered. It would sometimes get stuck at 66, 175, and 2920. It took about 30 parsings until it made the correct decisions to get all the posts.

I think that was the last thread with errors in it, so I will start compression now.

What do you recommend for browsing the database?

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-18 11:55

I've been using the command line program, sqlite3, to browse. I haven't written a browser yet. There is another person that has scraped /prog/ and has written a browser. The db schema is a bit different, so some names would need to change in the program or the db. It would be nice to have a browser. And heck once the browser is there, you basically have a sqlite powered text board with all of /prog/'s old content.

My current browsing experience:

When the singularity happens (still waiting, Kurzweil and Kaku), I'm going simulate my own private universe where I am a cute little witch and wear cute Touhou dresses, but everyone else is normal. I'll give them hope, then crush their dreams right in front of them, keeping them in perpetual misery. I'll curse them with ambitions, but make those ambitions impossible to fulfill. I'll give them a good life, then smash them right in the middle, just to give them a taste of the happiness that they never have. I'll delude them into thinking that they are free, then reveal to them that they are only my slaves. I'll torture and kill them, just to resurrect them and do it again, until their mind is completely broken and there is no shreds of a human left in them, then discard them and move on to the next victim. I'll make Hell, and condemn those who resent my evil ways to eternal agony. I'll teach them concepts of justice just sneer in their faces as they try to reconcile my words with my actions. I'll reward those who emulate me with riches and power, and punish those who don't with starvation, sickness, and the death of those around them. I'll make them toil for their entire lives to build monuments to my vanity. I'll give them brief reprieves of love and contentment, then kill off everything they loved and leave them wondering what they did wrong.<br/>
<br/>
This will be a very fun and very intellectual game -- I am very much looking forward to it.
