Some former critics of Direct3D acknowledge that now Direct3D is as good if not better than OpenGL in terms of abilities and ease of use. In January 2007, John Carmack said that "…DX9 is really quite a good API level. Even with the Direct3D side of things, where I know I have a long history of people thinking I'm antagonistic against it. Microsoft has done a very, very good job of sensibly evolving it at each step—they're not worried about breaking backwards compatibility—and it's a pretty clean API. I especially like the work I'm doing on the 360, and it's probably the best graphics API as far as a sensibly designed thing that I've worked with."

We had these things for years, in fact mesa supported Direct3D 9 and 10 long ago

Nvidia should adapt it's driver for Linux.

You mean new version of OpenGL or old version? I like new, because writing shaders is fun. Old version is very limiting. I can do whatever I want in new version (Don't like to use matrices in your calculation? Then don't use them! etc.)

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-26 14:00

If it doesn't look good and run well on a gameboy, it's shit.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-26 18:48

Both OpenGL and Direct3D are almost irrelevant today, shaders are 80% of the graphic code, everything else tries to send data to the gpu asap fuckers

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-27 1:57

>>8
It's the remaining 20% that matter, you can't write an application in shaders, and GLSL is a subset of OpenGL.

derp

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-28 5:56

Not irrelevant. You can only use DirectX on Windows. On the other hand, OpenGL API is a bit silly. Some objects handled by state machine, very weird.

Any good references for learning GLSL?

better learn OpenCL. It uses plain C.

OpenCL is no good for real time graphics.

Name: Anonymous 2014-04-28 15:59

Ray tracing is shit for realtime. Sure you can draw few spheres, but what you need is millions of triangles.

"We're quickly approaching a time where rasterization-based gaming APIs won't be able to keep pace with the realism gamers demand," said Jules Urbach, Founder and CEO, OTOY. "As media and entertainment companies look to leverage existing assets across movie, television, and game mediums, and as we face an ever more connected future, the top game studios know that the cloud is the logical solution. We have the distinct pleasure of working with several premiere developers using Brigade to explore jaw-dropping next-generation games, and with today's announcement we look forward to getting Brigade into even more developers' hands in the near future."

WHY THE FUCK DO WE INSIST ON RECREATING THIS SHITTY EARTH
Because the only application of computers is to model real world and make sound decisions based on the model. The more precise is the model - the more informed are the decisions. There is no point in modelling non-real world.

I've just looked through JRR Tolkien's book and inferred, that his Middle-earth world includes:
1. bacteria, because food rots;
2. gravity, because characters manage to walk and there is an atmosphere;
3. sun, because characters refer to it;
4. gravity implies that Tolkien's world is round.
5. chemistry, due to breathing, eating and sleeping of characters (including fantasy ones), meaning there are underlying chemical processes.

I'm pretty sure, we can find a lot of that crud in your Gensokyo too, because there are numerous pictures of Reimu defecating and eating crap.

So we should use computers only to simulate the real world because... Tolkien wrote about a world with gravity and you don't like Discworld or O'Neill cylinders? Whatever point you tried to make, rest assured you haven't accidentally said anything relevant.

Play Tetris upside-down, then the gravity will be reversed. Also there is no breathing or chemistry in Tetris.

Don't change these.
