How does xBR scaler work?

Name: Anonymous 2014-05-22 1:53

Could it be used to interpolate other kind of data? Because it gives vector-art quality results from low-res images: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htdi5jc3Ijc

that is compared to all other resampling algorithms, you can find in math books.

oh... it indeed does conversion to vector form (edge detection):

Why do people bother with these edge detection upscale filters? they always look shit compared to the actual pixels.

xBR looks a lot better than simpler filters:

artists use it to upscale pixelart, when adapting old games for new releases. It could also be used to remaster anime and similar animations.

holy shit, that looks amazing

also, not that they use hybrid approach to scale the art - i.e. merging bicubic and xbr, so that smooth gradients would be preserved.
