How does xBR scaler work?

Why do people bother with these edge detection upscale filters? they always look shit compared to the actual pixels.

artists use it to upscale pixelart, when adapting old games for new releases. It could also be used to remaster anime and similar animations.

also, not that they use hybrid approach to scale the art - i.e. merging bicubic and xbr, so that smooth gradients would be preserved.
