These happen to be the most important keys. You can't rebind to other letters either because once you do that, up to four other keys are missing and require a rebind. This makes the mnemonics useless and requires you to reinvent the entire interface because everything is designed around hjkl. To add insult to injury, you can't even use the fucking arrow keys properly because these don't work with compound commands.
