Produce an artificial intelligence that will crack the drm plugin automatically, hack into networks of media companies, and use their own servers to seed the torrents of the copyright protected material.

We see them everywhere. On fan-made YouTube videos with people's fan-characters, on Photobucket, DeviantART, even in a kid's coloring book. So the question is: why are recolored characters bad? Well all that will be explained, we will see if it's true artistic talent/creativity and the consequences recolors cause, as well as the overall reputation of how people look at recolors.

So now, is recoloring a true artistic skill? Well let's see: when one recolors, you take someone's art of a character, you add either minor or major adjustments to your liking and then voila! A recolored character! The answer to that is a big fat NO. Recoloring is something ANYONE can do. Truly making a piece of art from scratch is something only skilled artists can produce seeing not everyone is as artistic as others. You see, a true artist would make his/her own work without the aid of another artist's work to color over. A true artist takes hours or much longer to produce art - something that recoloring takes less than maybe what? 15 minutes to color over. Which brings me into the next topic: the consequences of recoloring.

The consequences of recoloring. At least on DeviantART the people running the website take some measures to explain recoloring (whither it's a screenshot or some kind of other image on the Internet) is not appropriate. From, What Happens When You Submit Infringing Works to deviantART?
"When we become aware that a deviantART submission infringes upon the copyrights of another artist, creative person or company, we will immediately delete it. This is a legal requirement which we fulfill immediately; you will not receive an advanced warning and you will not be given an opportunity to 'fix it'. Any copyright owner following the procedures in this Copyright Policy can require deviantART to remove his or her copyrighted content." As you can see, recolors aren't allowed on the website, yet many people continue to recolor whither they know or not that recoloring isn't allowed on a website meant for artists. For those of you who do in fact recolor, you should be aware what will happen if you continue to post up recolored pictures. "If you are found to repeatedly post infringing content your account will be suspended and serious offenders will have their account banned and deactivated. If you are found deliberately misrepresenting the copyrighted work of another as your own your account will be immediately banned and deactivated." Perhaps it's just some people who don't know (or stubborn) that recoloring is bad will be banned as a consequence. But that's not just all. Did you know that recoloring can do more than just get you banned from DeviantART? From, If you take my work down am I protected from a lawsuit?
"No. Even if deviantART takes an infringing work down, if you put it up on deviantART you may still be responsible for very significant damages if the copyright owner decides to sue you." So yes recoloring can do a lot more than merely ban one person or get their recolored pictures taken down. Oh yes, the owner of a work someone recolored over has the right to sue the person who recolored his/her work. It's possible in America, and yes the American laws also apply to DeviantART (American-made website) in case you didn't know. Go look at FAQ #250. As you can see it's no wonder DeviantART is against the idea of people recoloring, they aren't the only ones against recoloring.

If i notice artwork that i know has been stolen or traced somewhere i immediately report it,but what's sad is that EVERY thing i have ever reported i have NEVER got a message about it. One time years ago i tried to report someone for clearly taking sprites and official artwork and coloring over it and it took almost 2 YEARS for it to get removed, and that's when i sort of lost hope of reporting things. I don't go crazy and look at all sorts of art until i find something fishy and report them I'm not like that. The only time i notice it is if it appears in my messages or someone stole off of one of my friends and that's when i do something about it. But its a shame that everything i have ever reported, only one got solved. There was a couple times that my art or character's directly got stolen from years ago and i don't think they ever got solved. Its been so long that i can't remember who they were.

I have been noticing a lot of people have been stealing or tracing art lately,so my newest artworks will probably have a watermark on them and that should stop some of it when it comes to me. For the 5 years i have been on DA my art rarely got stolen so when i did find something of mine i did report it. I can't solve my art from being stolen on every website, but as long as i can get it solved here I'm pretty much happy.

I know there are other art websites out there, but to be honest i absolutely love Deviantart despite its issues, but if you think about it every website has there own problems. There really is no such thing as a perfect site. My opinion is that there's so many member's on this site now that even though they have a ton of administrators its hard to keep up and most of them get lazy and want nothing to do with it. I know its the wrong thing to do,but still people do it. There are probably good Deviantart Administrators out there that actually care about the problem and solve it,but it seems that the careless administrators are more then the good ones. What should happen is that the administrators that don't do very well and don't solve anything constantly they should be replaced to avoid further problems. I don't know if they do that, and if they are they need to do it more often.

well yeah i think when i was 5 me and my bro tried drawing pokemon from the pokemon book and we traced stuff then too but everyone does it at like 5 XD
your not exactly.....how to say...very smart back then XD

but yeah to do t now is a horrible thing that wont go away either and yes some bases can fall under it to..... i guess unless yu make the base but i never really understood base art anyway 0.o

Name: Anonymous 2014-06-16 12:58

there are plenty of schmucks out there who will claim that anything is art to make a buck. Well now apparently its Ok for people to use your art without your permission as long as they trace it, or add some paint to it to make a profit off of your original idea and hard work! How does this seem legal? Well I for one STRONGLY disagree with this heinousness! So I have taken all my prints off of deviant art like many other artists in the DA community, and will not be one to endorse them as long as they are ok with this type of copyright infringement.

future aspiring members that the use of bases or manipulation of images that
are not produced fully by your hand are not allowed within the group.

There USED to be a BHB journal explaining everything that happened , but DA recently banned a bunch of groups for whatever fucking reason. Anyways, it turned out that Rai (Nincianda) was Kas all along and wasn't actually 13 and had been banned from DA I believe at least 10 times already? Anyways, she was caught and flipped the fuck out. Aisha was caught tracing and left DA forever, but she still uses tumblr.

Nincianda ended up being someone who drew badly but found out people thought it was cute for a 12/13 year old. She also ran around telling people crazy stories about how she was abused and other shit, but when people got together they found out her stories were very inconsistent. Basically she'll say and do anything for attention, so just keep in mind if you do read the stricken out text that Kas and Skindles are both Rai.

If you're interested in the on going and increasingly idiot debate over weather aisha traces or not, please research if you're going to bother. Not just aisha, but actually bother drawing first. I've seen many comments such as "explain how she traced the sparkles then!!!" (yes, that was an actual fucking comment). Tracing happens. Alot on this site, actually. There's been many Daily Deviations and Contest winners that were directly traced off a photo or another artists work. A hilarious example would be the Dark Shadows Context. While most of those are direct traces, children on this site don't seem to understand that just because it doesn't match up completely does not mean it wasn't traced. There's such thing as "pose tracing" or even edit tracing- which people on this site seem to think is okay. It's not.

That's something many people believe. Many people believe that photography isn't art either, or that photomanipulation is cheating. Some people say rolling on a canvas nude whilst covered with paint results in art. Some disagree. The debate "What is art?" is something which will go on forever, and will be answered differently by every individual to which the question is posed. There are some people who believe that photographing a dog as it starves to death is art, and back in the 1960's Piero Manzoni provided us with "Merda d'Artista" - - he sealed his excrement (that's poop for you newbs) in a bunch of cans, which he signed, mounted and then sold as art. We are aware that some people reading this article right now believe that tracing is not an art -- and that's ok, we respect your right to have your own opinion, and this does not prevent you from participating in our community

At deviantART we believe that tracing has a place in our community. We consider it to be a valid learning tool and a technique which has been used long before we had any such applications such as Illustrator or Photoshop. Tracing is how Michelangelo's assistants transferred his "cartoons" onto the ceiling of the Sistine Chappell. We believe that it is the right of any individual to express themselves within our policies and to share their creativity with the community, interact with other deviants and grow as an artist.
