1984 is one of my all time favorite books. As an African American, I see 1984 as an analogy to the plights that blacks in America must go through. From the moment of our arrival, we have been slaves. They not only forced us to do things physically, but got inside our heads as well. This was done through the use of: Name changing. Taking away our indigenious name and naming us after the slave masters. Changing our religion, (whatever it was) into Christianity. Changing our clothing. Changing our country. They've even erased our history just like 1984. I don't know where I came from. The media tries to manipulate me into recognizing the U.S as my homeland. My mother land. Everyday in school I was told to say the pledge of allegiance to the state. How can you not see the parallels between blacks in American and 1984?
