Before you install any piece of software, it is essential that your hard drive be in optimal working order. It is recommended that you scan and defragment your hard drive to ensure that your hard drive's data is stored properly. Failure to verify this may result in corrupt data.
To run SCANDISK: 1. Left-click on the START button from the Taskbar. 2. From the START menu, highlight PROGRAMS, then select ACCESSORIES SYSTEM TOOLS, and finally SCANDISK, to activate the program. 3. Once activated, make sure that there is a check mark in the AUTOMATICALLY FIX ERRORS box, and select the hard drive you are installing to. Once everything is set up correctly, click "START" in the dialogue box to have the program start scanning your hard drive and correct any errors. 4. Next, run defragment your hard drive by going to SYSTEM TOOLS (as in the previous step) and highlight DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

Direct X is a Windows 95 game API (Advanced Programs Interface) that was designed to smooth game play in Windows 95 as well as provide hardware compatibility. At this time there are still hardware manufacturers whose products do not work properly with DirectX. If any of the hardware you are using does not support DirectX, please check with the manufacturer to obtain updated drivers that fully support Windows 95 and DirectX. DragonHeart: Fire & Steel requires DirectX 2 hardware compatibility in order to run properly. Stuttering sound, distorted video, or other hardware problems may be due to DirectX incompatibility. If you are unsure whether or not your hardware drivers are DirectX certified, run INSTALL DIRECTX from the DragonHeart AUTOPLAY menu. This will launch DXSETUP which lists all of your video, audio, and network drivers. Drivers marked "CERTIFIED" are DirectX compatible; drivers that say "NO HARDWARE SUPPORT" or say nothing at all are not DirectX compatible and may cause problems when running the game. You can attempt to install DirectX by clicking on "Reinstall DirectX". If your drivers still do not certify, please contact your hardware manufacturer to obtain Windows 95 DirectX compatible drivers for that device. Also, if DirectX overwrites a device driver that detriments system performance, you may "Restore Windows Drivers" from DXSETUP as well.

Q: When running DragonHeart, my Windows 95 desktop background will become off color? Why does it do this? A: Computers running in 256 color mode will only be able to support one 256 color image at a time. When running DragonHeart your background image will temprarily become a 16 color image while DragonHeart is running.
Q: Why does my screen saver activate while I'm playing DragonHeart? A: When using the joystick as an input device, the screen saver will activate if Windows 95 does not receive any keyboard or mouse activity. If you are going to play DragonHeart with a joystick, game pad, or GrIP disable your screen saver.
