Open Source is a fucking bullshit hassle

Name: Anonymous 2014-10-02 22:53

Beginning of the day:

Hmm, I've been meaning to install this program again. I know just what CFLAGS to compile it with, but I'd better open it first. I go to decompress it and... what are the arguments to tar again? I open the browser to look them up. Whelp, might as well check and see what the /prog/rider is up to! Hmmm, retarded as ever. Anyway, better get back to opening that file. Okay, wikipedia is the first result, so I'll just go there. ``Tar is a substance obtained from a variety of organic materials through destructive distillation.'' What the fuck that's not right. Wrong tar. What is destructive distillation anyway? Oh cool, chemistry. I wonder what ``pyrolysis'' is... I'll open a new tab for it....

Then, five hours later, just before bedtime:

Oh shit, I forgot all about compiling that software. Oh well, it will have to wait until tomorrow I guess.

"Free software programmer Lennart Poettering has been part of his fair share of controversy in the open source community, and his latest essay may raise the most eyebrows yet. Poettering takes on the idea that the community is one big happy family and has some harsh words for the loudest and most obnoxious members. He says in part: "I don't usually talk about this too much, and hence I figure that people are really not aware of this, but yes, the Open Source community is full of a#@&oles, and I probably more than most others am one of their most favourite targets. I get hate mail for hacking on Open Source. People have started multiple 'petitions' on petition web sites, asking me to stop working (google for it). Recently, people started collecting Bitcoins to hire a hitman for me (this really happened!). Just the other day, some idiot posted a 'song' on youtube, a creepy work, filled with expletives about me and suggestions of violence. People post websites about boycotting my projects, containing pretty personal attacks. On IRC, people /msg me sometimes, with nasty messages, and references to artwork in 4chan style. And there's more. A lot more."

Lennart potty ring is butthurt about people not liking either PulseAudio or systemd the let's bring dbus into kernel combine microsoft crap. Who would have fucking guessed.

When Debian gave in to systemd, it stopped working properly. I had to specifically purge it and replace it with real init, cron etc to make it work.

Not sure if this is the right place for this rant...

I've found a few flaws behind the defense of systemd:

It adds new features
It doesn't, almost nothing comes from systemd itself, except config files. the only "feature" one could recognize is consistency... But it, at the same time, these make linux less flexible.
How new are you to Linux? (How new is Poettering to Linux?)

Process/deamon control
Containers
See above. Cgroups is a kernel feature, LXC is a separate project, and neither of there features is systemd-specific nor dependent on it. There are tools to use this feature outside the systemd project.

It's modern, 21th century tech
See above. Also, some of these "new features" have been there for decades...

muh windows/solaris/mac feature
lel.

It's open source, you should be grateful
Bullshit. I could code malware to destroy your disks. Would you thank me if I made it open source?

muh boot times
http://gentooexperimental.org/~patrick/weblog/archives/2013-10.html#e2013-10-09T08_32_52.txt
That's how it got marketed in the first place, now it's a bunch of utilities taken from other projects and modified to depend on systemd. Also, a reduction of 10 seconds is useless in desktop and other systems, save a few.

muh stability
People used to post their uptime all the time, as something you could be proud. They still do, systemd changes nothing.

Poettering is a victim
[I don't have hard evidence for this] He's in the same level as Linus Torvalds in their egocentric attitude, and both are as assholes as the other. Linus is almost irreplaceable to Linux, Poettering and systemd are a fad.

You can fix/fork it
There shouldn't be the need to fork what wasn't broken in the first place. I also don't have the time/resources/followers as him, and I'm not being paid by Red Hat.

He's doing it out of altruism
See above.

In short: systemd is worthless, and you bought the marketing newspeak.

muh statu quo
muh feminism
Bunch of petite bourgueoisie whiners crying about the statu quo in the IT world? Top fucking lel.
Compare the situation to, say, the rights of (IT) workers being trampled everywhere (yes, even in "first world" countries), all the time. Or innocent people being killed in syria with the complicity and the resources (from your taxes [the syrian opposition, including ISIS, received funding from the US government]) of your governments. Or the situation of poor people in the world, in general. You aren't doing shit for them, you are taking advantage of the very same statu quo you supposedly hate so much, for your own personal profit. Go cry elsewhere.

And if you want to call yourself "Social Justice Warrior", you could start, say, by reading some history:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covert_United_States_foreign_regime_change_actions
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_interventions_of_the_United_States

or, if you want to see something closer to home:

Little kike is butthurt because his software is absolute fucking shit that ignores the long-running philosophy of a well established community. What the fuck? Just because you shat on everyone's face and made the turd open source doesn't mean you're entitled to a daily share of 50 compliments and donations.

Didn't know about the hitman thing, I hope he actually gets killed. G-d he's being such an insufferable imbecile.

syslogd is why I can't install Evince on Debian anymore. It drags syslogd along with it.
Considering a move to another distro. Any advice?

Surprisingly sane discussion on the matter on YC. I would usually expect the comments there to be rated inversely.

Ubuntu will be moving to systemd soon. Guix is the future maybe? Or Gentoo with the pkg manager in a different language.
