I've been in a few mental hospitals too. While of course I think our psychiatric system is getting out of hand and many people are being brainwashed into taking medicine, a lot of the people I met there were people who were genuinely fucked up in the head and needed any kind of help immediately. These were the type of people who were dangers to themselves and others. They had delusional beliefs, many were violent or suicidal, and there was just something off about each one (one particular case which was harmless, but representative of his ill state of mind, was a schizophrenic who was 100% convinced he had a best friend who was a brick named Allan, sent by aliens as proof of god.)
