My first formal introduction to Turing machines was actually in a philosophy of math class.
Conway's Game of Life is actually Turing complete. It is programmable via the initial configuration.

Why are some people so obsessed with the game of life?
Which people? It's deep enough for obsessives to obsess over and it has that magic ingredient of complexity arising from simplicity that makes it a valid avenue of academic study in math and CS areas. If there's another group I'm not aware of it.
