It's worse than you think man. SJWs complained to Apple about their emoji font not being diverse enough, so they added all of this multicultural variation shit for each glyph, with like 16 shades of skin color for each smiley face controlled by a variation selector prefix codepoint.

It's a fucking nightmare. I had to deal with this shit at work. And since they're colored glyphs, it fucks up your usual algorithms for LCD sub-sampled rendering you typically use, so you've got to add these separate codepaths just for caching the glyphs in textures, and so on and so forth.

Most of the emoji are above the Basic Multilingual Plane (have codepoints requiring more than 16-bits). So if you force your programs to only accept BMP code planes or UCS-2 characters, force FreeType into UCS-2 mode, etc. you can stop emoji from infecting your program.
