the problem comes with the little colorful emoticons people choose to represent them as and the idiotic ideas they have about them, leading to things like constructing families and skintones and shit.
if there was just a wingdings section and that was the end there'd be no problem.

maybe things would be better if the unicode people would just gut all the 'emoji' they added, and told phoneshits and the rest that the text encoding is not responsible for their neo-smileys-
we'd still have said smileys, but they'd be the problem of whoevers felt the need to have them. apple can arbitrarially translate random characters from the cuneiform and mayan hieroglyphs into their smileys if they want, or send it as strings like :BROWN13MAN.BROWN08BOY.BROWNO9GIRL.WHITE16WOMAN:. or whatever.
