Behold, git emits tar output directly for all your file flinging needs. There's even a pipe in there!

Granted, there's no inverse option to extract tar output and create a commit from it. If you are the sort who prefers cpio, you might object to this. However, if you prefer tar you have already abdicated all authority to complain about lack of symmetry in your tools.
