Their (actually his - Shay Banon's) initial goal was to produce a piece of bullshit software to get funding money which would otherwise be spent on real software like Solr. He succeeded in getting the money, lots of it actually.

Which for some reason never gets fixed, as the users keep having the same issues, which were supposedly made obsolete by 0.90, years later with 1.6.2.
