This is a movie about the creation of Facebook. It gets praise even in places like /prog/ for its accuracy in certain technical details. It's an ok movie, but there is one line in it that really bothers me.

There is a hacking scene in the beginning of the movies where he is trying to get as many females pictures as possible from the student houses databases to create a website to rank women. It's admittedly a decent scene (other than using emacs for anything useful). Following this he demands the algorithm his roommate used to rank chess players. I don't know a ton about the history of ELO ratings, but in looked like a normal ELO algorithm that had been around for a long time. Someone who studies computer science at Harvard ought to be able to create an ad hoc version themselves pretty easily. Sorry that was a tangent, not what actually bothered me.

Following this when he gets in trouble for his website, he says he deserves recognition from the board for pointing out security flaws. When the IT dude protests and says they have sophisticated security and that's what lead them to him in the first place, he says "if you had known what you were looking for, you would have seen it on my bedroom window".

What the fuck does that even mean? If they had known he was going to scrape all the websites for pictures of girls and make a shitty website, they would have scoured all the windows in the area for potential ELO algorithm formulas? I really don't see how anyone can say this movie is redeemable following this scene. Unless someone can point out how that makes any sense, it should follow it's the worst movie ever.

I've never seen it and I don't think we've ever discussed it on /prog/ before.

He is suggesting that the presence of security flaws is trivial to a knowledgeable individual. He is using a turn of phrase which is not meant to be taken literally. His purpose is to be flippant while indicating that the IT guy has failed to do a fairly easy job, which is fair, since if the school had not wanted anyone to write a script to pull all the images from the face book, they could have done so trivially. It's not like it was event a real ddos attack.

What kind of turn of phrase is that? It's nonsense.

Is there any other kind?

The scene is question was realistic because it really happened. The whole monologue was taken verbatim from Z's blog.

Someone who studies computer science at Harvard ought to be able to create an ad hoc version themselves pretty easily.
Some people enjoy reinventing the wheel. Sometimes your just pulling an all nighter over a six pack, you're looking at a long task list and you realize, "hey, why don't I repurpose this code to do such such so I can move on."

Then I imagine the reason that the scene in the movie immediately cut to the next scene after he said that was because the IT guy walked over immediately and slapped him silly. What a stupid thing to say. There are better ways to say that are lacking security features in some area in a cocky way.

I think the whole point of the movie is that Zuckerkike hasn't been beaten enough in his life.
