Why does Adobe Acrobat Reader require a restart on update?

and in the time of Windows 98, Adobe Acrobat required no updates and worked faster than today. Whats happening?

I remember reading a 200+ page PDF-manual on a 33MHz/16MB 486. Modern software is shit, but everybody on this board already knows that.
