How is this at all acceptable?

github somehow rose to own a practicla monopoly on free software code hosting and they go on about open source and blagh blha blah but the site itself is closed source.

why was this allowed to happen?

Blame appers, they are the only ones that use it anyway.

I disagree. It's trivial to setup your own service which is a permanent online service providing hosting for git based projects. After that, it's not hard to develop a web interface to allow web interaction to that project.

Just because they have the largest servers and most users, doesn't mean you have to use github if you want to use git.
