Invasion of Poland was to take back German lands taken after World War I and to put an end to the slaughter of ethnic Germans in Poland. Soviets were going to invade no matter what because communism is an international movement and it requires invasion and revolution in order to thrive.

Poland had been doing a pretty good job of keeping the Soviets out of Europe for the last 19 years or so. There is no doubt that the Soviets desired to expand into Europe, but the military cost of doing so was high enough that they were unwilling to do so without support, especially considering that in 1939 they had just been through the Great Purge and were in no position to take on the entirety of Europe. The most charitable interpretation of Hitler's invasion of Poland was that he was trying to trick the Soviets into a decisive engagement to drive them out of Europe, however even then it entailed putting the entirety of Western Europe at risk without their permission.

True, which is why the civil war in Spain was more or less a proxy war for the Soviets. They had been building up their military in the meantime and the Wehrmacht was well on its way to crushing them completely until Lend-Lease, American and British material support.

They were ``collaborators" only insofar as agreeing to work with Communists on certain goals. By that ``logic", one can equally say that anyone who opposes Communism is a ``Nazi collaborator", simply because opposing Communism is one trait of Nazis.

Hitler had also succeeded in crushing France, Poland, and much of the Scandinavian countries as well. Supporting the Soviets through Lend-Lease was basically self-defense for the surviving non-Axis European powers; they didn't like Communists but the Axis had made itself a greater immediate threat to stability and peace in Europe, such that it was easy to regard the Soviets as ``the lesser of two evils."
