I had to boot old windows setup just to download files from USB camera. Ubuntu didn't see them with Gthumb, thunar,/media/, /mnt/ and that despite the claims driver is supported.
maybe the camera only supported PTP and couldn't be accessed with MTP

Mystery deepens: an Ubuntu Studio 16.04 machine can access the file from camera perfectly. Maybe the stock Xubuntu lacks some driver/app/library for camera? >>7 What is needed to install?
gphoto2 and ghotofs briefly worked but adding a volume on the desktop that can't be read. Next reboot: its still in lsblk, but "not a valid block device" for mount -t vfat
