Why do so many hackers use dark themes for their editore/IDEs/any user interface? Is it a carryover from the console? I have tried it and it still makes me eyes bleed after a week.

They're easier to see. Have you ever stared at a lightbulb for a while? Bright themes are like that.

I agree. What's the point of a dark theme if the rest of your OS and browser is in a light theme? It's jarring. Light themes are more aesthetic.
dark themes = less light from the monitor = easier on the eyes. at least for me. also, consistency of aesthetics: I have a dark background and a bunch of semi-transparent terminal windows open most of the time, and it looks nice on awesomewm. when I open an IDE with a dark background, it's not as consistent due to lack of transparency but it doesn't stand out too much. then I open a browser and go to some webshite with a white background and it ruins it
