Instead of ads or subscriptions, an article is free, with no ads, but you have to let it run a cryptocurrency miner run in your browser for 10-15 seconds. Or, if you want a free version of an app, you have to let it use 10% of your CPU to mine cryptocurrency. Something like that. Or perhaps instead of cryptocurrency, it would use your computer as a kind of distributed host, like AWS, but your computer is the device doing the hosting or computing, and that happens in exchange for you getting the thing for free. In other words, someone can make money by giving people free apps or articles in exchange for temporarily using some of their computing resources, which will allow them to either mine cryptocurrency or sell VPS hosting.

It will not collect information about you, give you ads, or charge you money. It simply use your resources, which are valuable to other people.

Low powered end user devices aren't optimized for computing. What they are optimized for is getting human eyeballs, which means advertising will always be the economic optimum.

Sounds good for the first 12 seconds, which is how long it takes before the first abuse happens. Then the power users will all install NoCoin while all normies will wallow in the shitstorm.

How is this different than the current situation?

Don't change these.
