depending on what you mean by a 'programmer'. mathematicians make good computer scientists, complexity theorists, algorithm designers (or whatever is it that you call a guy who makes new algorithms) and optimizers. this is all good, but they (just like all other scientists who program shit) tend to make terrible software developers. they're absolutely terrible at structuring code, naming things, making useful build systems and - last but not least - creating a standalone package that you can install on your're are system:
