Do mathematicians make the best programmers?

Name: Anonymous 2018-11-29 10:18

depending on what you mean by a 'programmer'. mathematicians make good computer scientists, complexity theorists, algorithm designers (or whatever is it that you call a guy who makes new algorithms) and optimizers. this is all good, but they (just like all other scientists who program shit) tend to make terrible software developers. they're absolutely terrible at structuring code, naming things, making useful build systems and - last but not least - creating a standalone package that you can install on your're are system: https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/how_to_make_package_managers_cry/attachments/slides/2297/export/events/attachments/how_to_make_package_managers_cry/slides/2297/how_to_make_package_managers_cry.pdf

Mathematicians make the best Unabombers.

The Unabomber is a mathematician.

His so-called manifesto is freely available on the Internet at
"http://pathfinder.com" as a 221,188-byte file of HTML text with
NUMBERED paragraphs.

The mathematical Unabomber writes in paragaph 17 of "rational
calculation," and in paragraph 39 of "the pursuit of goal X." In
paragraph 57, the mad bomber speaks of "a new, ordered community"
which a non-mathematician would have called an orderly community.
In paragraph 99, the cowardly killer writes, "Think of history as
being the sum of two components...." (Think, rather, of the Una-
bomber as being a mathematician who uses perhaps a permutation of
his own national identification number as an authentication code
in dealing with The New York Times.) The mathematical psychotic
continues in paragraph 143: "In the past, human nature has been
approximately constant, or at any rate has varied only within
certain bounds." Q.E.D.

Overengineering and obtuse academical correctness.
Just look at hacker news.

it's not about what you know, it's about what you don't. scientists in general don't know software engineering, they only know small amount of programming that is needed to get the task done. there are exceptions, but there's only so many hours in a day and most scientists don't care to learn how to program well

Mathematicians generally specialize in their field and more specifically proving theorems about objects of their study, while programming doesn't require much of that deep math. In a nutshell, programming is about simple ifs and gotos. Mathematics is more about reasoning what and how you can achieve with these ifs and gotos, like for example studying the properties of cellular automatas. But it is still mostly theoretical work, that will take ages to get into practice.

It's funny how there were a lot less terrorists before the cia learnt how to make terrorists

They even hide among non-combatants just like the CIA
