Big site html is poo poo

When you view the source code of google, twitter, &c., you can see that their html is SHIT. Lots of empty elements, auto-generated css classes, and so on. Why is that? Is it a deluded way to stop webscraping weebs? Or do they just not care because there is nobody powerful who is actually harmed by this?
