doesn’t osx come with a media player? i’ve been using mpv without major annoyances so that’s my recommendation. otherwise safari and chrome are polished so maybe try them to play your files.

vlc always had that enterprise feeling. lots of half baked features, ugly, slow and mediocre at its core purpose.

OSX has ITunes. It is a huge and slow overbloated piece of shit. I need something like Winamp or Foobar. OSX has Foobar2000, but it is not the same Foobar2000 (it is shit). From free alternatives, there is also MPC, but it is similar to ITunes and crashes a lot. All actually good software is non-free. I have no money to buy it.

mpv
It is the same as MPlayer:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpv_(media_player)
based on MPlayer and mplayer2

I have MPlayer OSX and it is even worse than VLC.

There is even no official OSX package with it:
https://mpv.io/installation/

the garbage likely uses X11 emulation.

Same with GIMP
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/2731

The bug was there as long as I can remember, but nobody is going to fix it ever. Instead they invented "workarounds"

good stuff is payed
examples? i’ll gladly pay for quality. last time i checked was on windows and there didn’t seems to be worthwhile stuff. i thought it was one of the things where the free software was mediocre but worked well enough so there isn’t a market.

>>5
mpv based on mplayer which is bad
maybe there were enough iterations to be good now and be emancipated

>>6
x11 emu
that would surprise me. mpv is quite minimal and just the video with drawn control. i’d guess they just open a window natively and draw to it with the existing code. that’s how it works on windows and the setup code/platform layer for that is quite simple.

>>7
itunes killed and split off
good decision. bloated mega software rarely goes right. if it does the business potential triggers greed and garbage gets added.

examples?
QuickTime Pro

It is like QuickTime, but actually usable.

looks good. sadly it’s not supported anymore and is 32bit.

Most fascinating part of that thread for me:
Argh. People, that's a flame, not a troll. I swear, we're completely losing track of our terminology.

I haven't heard the term "flame" used to refer to an insult in aaaaaaages. On the other hand, "troll" which originally meant a specific type of post meant to incite anger seems nowadays to mean any sort of post meant to incite anger, regardless of method.

But I guess I also have some idea now why GNU/Linux distros always seem to include some piece of shit music player in their default software install instead of defaulting to VLC as a media player for everything.

Ten fucking years. How long did it take Apple? Two weeks.

That is because of mainstream media. They also use the term "troll" referring to paid shills/bots (i.e. Kremlin trolls), who do subversion, like inciting social strife. Yet that is not trolling, but propaganda. It is like referring to that spam as trolling.

Original trolling was was just a method of open criticism. When you take some subject and make fun of it, like passing Bible through Markov chains to make religious people mad.

Original trolling came from the the fishing definition, you drag some bait and see who bites.

Tried IINA (the MPV port for OSX). It too eats beginnings of very small sfx files, although less aggressively than VLC. The only open source way to play them is with Audacity, which doesn't support playlists.

So yeah, open source software can't even play properly a simple 16-bit WAV file. If that is not a failure of open source, then what is?

If you don't believe me, then try playing WAV files under "Button Press" folder in https://opengameart.org/content/assorted-sfx

many of them will get skipped.
