You're right about the hjkl remapping making pretty much everything useless, but what about the arrow keys not working with compound commands? d(down) or <(up) work fine for me.

i'm using evil-mode with colemak input method. way to enjoy issuing commands in qwerty layout.
https://github.com/fiocfun/colemak (exploitable)
also there is much more intricate hack in melpa repo if you prefer using system-wide colemak layout.

Weird, I could have sworn it didn't work. After all, that's the reason why I ultimately stopped using Vim. Now, this is good for me because my arrow keys are reasonably close to the home row, but this isn't the case for most people, so a similar problem remains for everyone who doesn't happen to have a setup with good arrow keys.

These happen to be the most important keys
requires you to reinvent the entire interface because everything is designed around hjkl
I'm pretty happily using Vim with Colemak, without remapping these keys.
In fact I like the position of hjkl keys on Colemak better because the fact I have to use the index finger in unintuitive way acts as a simple deterrent from actually using these movements. If you use hjkl for moving more than 2 characters horizontally or vertically, there is probably a better way to do it.

And if you honestly use arrow keys with Vim your argument instantly loses any credibility with me.
