Why is SICP so good?

Name: Anonymous 2017-01-30 21:32

Why is it considered an important work of computer science education? I read it out of curiosity last year, it's nothing special. It teacches some useful basics but quickly diverts into masturbatory academic drivel.

i think it got a lot of people interested in a lot of stuff they otherwise wouldn't have been exposed to.

without sicp i wouldn't have learned about lisp, haskell, logic programming, compilers, etc

SICP teaches some fundamental computer science topics. That's what makes it good.

so does any other online tutorial

without going into useless theory

And they happen to be nowhere near as good.

Those online tutorials did not exist in 1979. SICP has been around since 1979.

This explains why it is an important piece of history (agreed here), now why it is a resource worth using in 2017.

masturbatory academic drivel
liek what?

Well, it doesn't focus enough on pointer arithmetic, for one.

Pointer arithmetic is normal arithmetic. Just get a 1st grade maths book.

The fundamentals of computation is the same today as it has been in 1979. SICP teaches fundamental ideas that are applicable to all eras of computing.

SICP's problem is that it teaches only the bare fundamentals which are quicker grasped in practice. The rest of the book is irrelevant math problems, they don't have anything to do with programming.
Oh, and SICP doesn't teach anything about type theory, which is a big miss.

What's a good book about type theory?

You are confused if you think SICP is intended to teach programming. SICP's goal is to teach fundamental computational ideas that are valid in all cases with and without a computer.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-27 0:51

Nah it's designed to teach (read as) abuse recursive solutions.

I'm not sure I agree. Without SICP I would just be a code monkey, not knowing any of those "fundamentals" like understanding how dynamic dispatch, logic programming, lazy programming, and compilers work.

you're a fucking nigger and didn't understand the book at all and don't understand programming at all.

noobshits thaht cant program need to leave

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 5:23

SICP is why Pajeet is taking your jobs. It's a ``noobshit'' book.

why do people have to be so cruel to each other? im starting to think most of humanity sucks, and we r are all doomed..... i trust animals more than humans..... i cant even make a serious SICP thread without negative bullshit.....

Do you have non anecdotal evidence?

Look goys, I have a MIT education!
