It is indeed humorous. Maybe suckless is a giant satire performance piece on unix hipsterism and 'worse is better'?

I think they started off with good ideas and turned into exactly what you just described. r.i.p.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-26 16:23

I don't know, blind seems pretty useful.
What exactly you guys don't like about it?

fuck off

why are there so many noob retards that don't know anything about computers or programming on here recently?

Its too obvious this is satire on primitive, reductionist mindset of unix software(e.g.portable pixmap), consisting of future-proofing, portability and minimalism.
Of course, if this was invented in 1970's/1980's the glaring flaws and inefficiency would be laughed at too.
Only on modern hardware and generous disk space, this monstrosity can function, allowing hipsters to marvel at its 'worse is better' design mimicking vintage unix feels; its like recording your voice messages to vinyl, editing with a needle, and sending to the mailbox for that 1970's expirience.

this would be hilarious if it was satire.

but it's even funnier because it's not. Look how hard the guy has worked on it:

Its like they're stranded on empty desert island with ffmpeg in binary form and have to reinvent it from scratch.

I see nothing wrong with it.
How'd you guys approach this?

Even old, crappy computers can be used for large projects.

Doesn’t raw video takes up a lot of space?
Yes it does,

What exactly you guys don't like about it?
it's in the name and description: you're editing videos blind. not only that, you need 100GB to store less than 2 minutes of video. that's a lot even for intermediate representation because any performance gained by using pure C and having no GUI will be killed many times over by the constant disk I/O. the idea that such a format can be used for version control is just hilarious - imagine pushing petabytes of video to remote. the vision of using hand-rolled makefiles to automate video editing makes me want to kill myself.

basically, suckless guys are pointing at this and saying 'hey, you can do video editing in minimalistic, unixy CLI tools! no bloat necessary!' - but they don't consider the practical needs of people who actually do video editing.

in other words, >>6,7 are right

Name: Cudder !cXCudderUE 2017-02-27 10:51

hey, you can do video editing in minimalistic, unixy CLI tools!
You can already do that. It's called ffmpeg.

if the video is not too large, you can choose to compress it with bzip2 instead.
Maybe this works OK for simple 2D demos and other generated content, but for everything else, including video that comes from a camera...

>>6,7,11
The suckless philosophy is to strip out features to remove "bloat" rather than optimise to make them more efficient. Of course, doing the latter requires actually using a brain.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-27 10:54

>>22
ffmpeg is anything but minimalistic.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-27 10:56

>>22
nice dubs, but I wouldn't do much serious editing with ffmpeg. it's good for converting between formats and for simply joining videos/timelapse images together (so it beats blind because it doesn't force you to use their idiotic huge format) but trying to do actual edits (cutting, reordering, synchronizing with sound, stabilizing, not to mention any sort of post-processing) without a visual tool is too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it. believe me, I tried.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-27 19:34

what others are useless?

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 16:57

>>26
Do you have non anecdotal evidence?

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 18:06

Suckless needs a graphic image CLI editor where adding a circle is as simple as
image-add-circle filename -coordx:320 -coordy:300 -radius:100 -thickness:100 -color:#4340aa -alpha:90 -antialias:2 -layer:3

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 18:22

>>29
imagemagick does this (it's bloated as fuck though, so yeah..)

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 18:41

>>30
Anything that supports MNG will be bloated as fuck though.

Name: Anonymous 2017-02-28 22:34

>>29
You can do this in Gimp with Script-fu and Guile.

Name: Anonymous 2017-03-01 8:33

>>32
but Gimp is not CLI (which is why it's more usable than suckless attempts at image/video editing). also, it uses Guile now? I thought you script it with TinyScheme

Name: Anonymous 2017-03-02 4:14

>>33
You can launch Gimp with batch mode. Inside batch mode, you can run interactive mode where you manually type in your program or you can load a Script-fu program. Gimp was updated so that Script-fu would support Guile.

Name: Anonymous 2017-03-02 7:21

>>34
but gimp is still a GUI application which means that before using batch mode you can test your scripts by actually looking at the picture as it is being modified. which, once again, makes it infinitely less of a pain in the ass to use than blind CLI-based tools which suckless is trying to force. the point is that a tool that lets you edit pictures and videos without letting you see them is fucking stupid
