Where is Cudder's new web browser?

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-17 19:08

I'm sick of FF using as much memory as everything else combined.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-17 19:11

I'm implementing my new browser in Electron.js

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-17 19:50

A browser is a virtual machine. The VM needs to be secure. Oh, hey, some security researcher found a way to hack it. No need to worry, just apply a patch. The patch adds a little CPU and RAM use, but it's not that bad. Rinse and repeat * 1000.

Whenever a browser gets refactored, you see some nice performance improvements (such as Firefox Quantum). But every update after that usually makes it slower, adding more cruft to patch holes.

Use Links.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 9:24

>>5
Its for very simple sites. Modern web uses tons of JS,canvas and more recently WegGL.
If you think Links is sufficient, you're limiting your web experience drastically.

Cudder is all talk and no action

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 12:07

>>4
Why did you delete it?

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 14:52

Cudder's web browser memory footprint is almost negligible as it doesn't even exist.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 15:11

>>9
Well than, I would say it's a bit more than ``almost'' negligible.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 15:31

>>8

It was deleted by youtube moderation, because there was some batshit insane naked guy, masturbating on camera, all while speaking some nonsense about AI being solved in Forth programming language.

Google engineer spotted.
Also, if you were even slightly competent, you would know modern operating systems use unused RAM for caching.

Unused RAM is used by other apps.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 16:32

Desktop apps are dying. These days, it’s web for macOS/Linux/Windows and dedicated native apps only for iOS and Android. No, an Electron wrapper for a web app is not a real “native” client.

Unused Disk space is wasted disk space.
Unused CPU time is wasted CPU time.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 16:43

>>16
That may be true for disk space and RAM, but unused CPU time is good for batteries and for the power bills.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 17:09

>>17

Then you should rent your CPU to pay your bills.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-18 17:10

A proper browser would not support these for privacy, security, performance, as well as bloat and maintenance reasons.
Browsers such as the tor browser have JS disabled for a reason.

You’d make less money than the cost of the electricity required for it. CPUs are very slow compared to ASICs or GPUs.

``t.'' is an Ylilauta (and Finnish) thing, not a Reddit thing. Furthermore, saying ``go back to'' implies that people can only use one website or another. Guess what, gramps? It's important to use multiple social media platforms these days!

I wasn't implying you were from reddit, I thought you came from /pol/ or an equivalently shitty imageboard. Good to know you're actually from reddit. Also you're allowed to use multiple forums, just don't use the garbage ones and bring their shit back here.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-20 22:47

>>27
My dude, I started posting on world4ch in 2005. I only started using reddit in 2016.

Yeah, I use reddit now, but I'm not ``from'' reddit. I wouldn't call reddit a forum per se, it's more of a digg clone that I would describe as a content aggregator. Digg was never a traditional forum. It was like a public, proto-timeline. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And yeah, reddit's userbase can be annoying -- ultra-liberal, stupid jokes, eating up gross consumerist ``nerd'' culture, etc. But some niche subreddits can be useful, especially for tech, local events, and things like that.

Besides, nothing from my post was from reddit. If you think something I posted was from reddit, that's just you projecting your feelings about reddit and has nothing to do with my post. ``t.'' is not a reddit thing, it's a Finnish language thing and it's also from Ylilauta. And meta-posting shits up the board just as much (if not more) than your perceived ``reddit posts''. It contributes nothing of value.

I'e seen meta-posting like yours in BBSes, IRC, phpBB forums, SomethingAwful (``go back to GBS''), 4chan, reddit, world4ch, and countless other online communities/forms/social media platforms/websites. You think you're the only person who does it, but it's a common trope among many different sites and communities. In no case does it ever contribute anything of value or make the board better.

Rose-tinted glasses and bullshit like that. When you get older, your memories fade, and even change. You look back fondly and gloss over the problems and concentrat only on the good things. Eternal September wasn't just an influx of newfags, it was also that generations ``everything was better back in the day'' which pretty much every generation in history had, even pre-internet.

But whatever. It's 420 and I'm arguing on the internet. Time to stop.

This is a myth, as you can easily see if you install something like uMatrix and block all JS and third-party requests. Most of the good web stays usable. Occasionally, you have to unblock some CSS here and there but that's it. Blocking cookies kills way more websites for the most ridiculous of reasons. If you think the web consists mostly of Web 7.0 shit, you need to stop visiting garbage sites.

>>19
Browsers such as the tor browser have JS disabled for a reason.
When did this happen? Last time I checked (about three years ago?) they had JS enabled by default and re(!)configured NoScript to blacklisting mode. All the while hacking on ``privacy improvements'' like changing the JS runtime to return a random timezone to prevent timezone tracking. Because yes, obviously that is the problem, not that you're randomly executing code from the Internet over a random proxy.

Cookies are the only way you can have good session management

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-22 16:20

Cookies are a shitty hack on top of a stateless protocol. But what I meant is that many sites require cookies even though they shouldn't need to manage much of anything.

RAM is cheap. Who cares? Seriously, are you on a toaster from the 90s? You can easily get a desktop with 32GB of RAM or a laptop with 16GB of RAM. Cheap laptops come with 8GB. That's enough that you don't have to worry about how much RAM your browser uses. Oh no, it uses a couple gigs of RAM! So what? That's what it's there for.

Yeah, browsers are to blame. Not coal, fossil fuels, over-consumption, overpopulation, driving everywhere instead of having denser urban planning, heating in the winter, AC in the summer, lights on 24/7, etc.

Your laptop's web browser will single-handedly save the world.

Name: Anonymous 2018-04-23 7:01

>>51
There are billions of mobile/laptop/tablet devices which are mostly used for online content. They use battery power.
By reduced drain on batteries, batteries last longer.
Longer lasting batteries mean less batteries manufactured, less pollution and less waste. So leaner browsers do help.

I have not forgotten, my anger at the mainstream browser(s) continues to grow, and every time it does, I am motivated to work on the browser a little more.

CSS parsing and layout is what I'm currently focusing on.
