``a source-based distro is more secure because you can't trust binaries''

then this shit happens lol

the gentoo security model is outdated and broken

it's so absurd that freetard /g/ros think source code means safe when they don't even know how to read code. 99.9999% of people who install FOSS shitware never read any of the code.

it's the tragedy of the commons. everyone expects someone else to have done the work.

instead of trusting that strangers would have volunteered to audit software I run, I'd rather just pay a pittance for a real company to vet the apps I run on my machine.

That's not how tragedy of the commons works dipshit. At least wikipedia it before you pretend to not be a moron. In the case of FOSS, in the overwhelming majority of cases, someone has read the source code. Linux, gcc, openssh, and software that people actually use has been heavily audited.

auditing isn't a magic bullet for security

It's just a mirror that was not even used by default for updates.
That being said, I do wonder if they sign their proper repo - git should have forced signatures.

That's not the aim of Free software. Free software movement does not claim its aims to have 'well audited code', nor to be more reliable or secure. It simply aims for freedom, and to remove subjugation of users by developers. The disclosure of source is at the very least a gesture, and acts as a mere prerequisite for the freedom to run a program as you wish for any purpose.
I believe it's 'open source' faggots that spread this myth.

freedom to have crashes and bugs
freedom to have a pretentious community where, if you ask for support, or mention a bug, they will blame you because they have stockholm syndrome
freedom to have no support for widely used commercial software
freedom to get hacked because of security problems
freedom to have decreased performance and battery life
freedom to be a social outcast for using a weird operating system nobody actually uses on their personal computers
freedom for your IoT and networking equipment to be added to a botnet
muh freedums

I think the real stockholm syndrome is being a skype user subject to forced and damaging upgrades, or having adverts on one's desktop, or not being able to copy and play media to appropriate devices because of DRM.
I do not recognise many of the issues listed there. It is true that the Free software community does not entirely meet modern needs, but generally the stability of software is as good as the packages one chooses and normally are not made to be forced upgraded, and Free software is broadly exempt from a class of security issues - intentional and persisted backdoors by developers.
But in any case, as per my initial point, these are problems to be worked through. Users are informed of defects, many other kinds of security issues are manage by the community, and the wide adoption of Free operating systems is an ongoing effort.
Free software community is not ashamed of our flaws, because we're always trying to resolve and improve them. What's worse is arrogance and damaging denial.

Renegotiate you're support contract.

??? I use skype and don't understand what you mean by that
having adverts on one's desktop
not a thing for macOS
not being able to copy and play media to appropriate devices because of DRM
Spotify Premium is cheap, who gives a shit?
torrents are even less convenient than streaming nowadays
Free software community does not entirely meet modern needs
understatement of the century
not made to be forced upgraded
yeah, because old versions of software with compatibility or security issues are great, lack of updates is a good thing!!! lol if anything you're taking the wrong approach for making a case for FOSS because package managers and free updates are a good thing, not a bad thing -- quit being autistic and thinking outdated versions of software are somehow better
broadly exempt from a class of security issues
dude do you even read about CVEs? lmao yeah FOSS security is perfect
intentional and persisted backdoors by developers
you don't need proprietary software to have a backdoor
it can be as innocuous as an ``accidental'' security issue
>many other kinds of security issues are manage by the community
shellshock was a thing for decades before it got discovered and fixed
DECADES
shut the fuck up
you know how many people probably got APTed as a result of that? you think the person who publicly disclosed it was really the first person to find out about it? yeah right
wide adoption of Free operating systems is an ongoing effort.
almost nobody uses desktop linux, and android is spyware, even if it is based on linux
we're always trying to resolve and improve them
GIMP looks the same as it did a decade ago
the linux desktop environment UX is about the same too
it's becoming increasingly irrelevant in an era where there's more to computing than desktop operating systems with like a 2003 model of usability

face it: FOSS is good in theory, but falls short in reality

clearly better than skype security. I mean, plaintext in $CURRENT_YEAR?

There is nothing wrong with streaming, in fact I find streaming media useful. Streaming with DRM is a problem, when it restricts users. For one, being able to make local copies of media is such a huge issue that Fred Rogers went to the US Supreme Court to fight for the right for parents to make VCR recordings of TV shows.
So how about digital media? Did you know little kids have the tendency to replay videos and songs so much that the non-Free kid's mobile application 'PlayKids' is forced to concede that all media streamed is doubly stored locally on the phone. Albeit they took the extra step to encrypt the local copies and the DRM still applies, but if it was the developer's whim in the first placed to say 'no, you cannot make local copies for your kids', and that, 'we can't be bothered to enforce DRM beyond streaming it'.
quit being autistic and thinking outdated versions of software are somehow better
This was not my argument. For many individuals and organisations, forced upgrades are not suitable, but they are often denied the ability to prevent them. They are even prevented from sharing a copy of the software to another organisation or community in order to maintain that version.
This point works in the other direction, by the way. For example, users of smartphones are prevented from upgrading their operating systems and have access to new features because their hardware is 'too old'.
lmao yeah FOSS security is perfect
Never said that. Software security, Free or not, is far from perfect. We are working to resolve them.
you don't need proprietary software to have a backdoor
That is true, that is why I carefully qualified my claim with 'intentional' backdoors. Backdoors intentionally introduced by the malice of developers are heavily inhibited in Free software, and are not normally persisted.
shellshock was a thing for decades before it got discovered and fixed
Yep. There's been decade-long security flaws in sendmail, and the linux kernel. Does the Free software community regret that? Sure. Are we ashamed? Of course not, because they were never result of developer's intentions to subjugate users.
Do you think the Wikipedia community is ashamed of some of its flawed articles? No, in fact, they plaster big old templates at the top. 'This article is crap', 'this article is inaccurate', 'hey this person died recently, don't believe everything you read here'. Yet at the end of the day, Wikipedia still manages to be a more useful resource of general information than any other encyclopedia, because of how it focuses of freedom of access, and how it embraces self improvement.
almost nobody uses desktop linux, and android is spyware, even if it is based on linux
We're just getting started! Even if it is an inherently small fraction, more people use desktop GNU+Linux than ever in the past and more people are being encourage. Sure, it sucks what a lot implementaions of Android are, but let's not take for granted what a decent portion of a Free software stack has afforded to our society. People have the courage
[GNU+Linux] it's becoming increasingly irrelevant in an era where there's more to computing than desktop operating systems
Not sure I understand your point here. A desktop operating system is becoming less relevant when desktop operating systems are becoming less relevant? I can only assume you're implying that the progress of the Free software community is pegged to the progress of the GNU+Linux desktop, which in turn is bounded by the relevance of desktop operating systems as a whole. That isn't true at all. I could argue that GNU+Linux is fact very good, but let's see the bigger picture here.
We already know that Free software has firmly established itself in servers and supercomputing, no small feat there. It is finding itself into embedding computing, the stack of widely used smartphones, etc. It is not losing relevance in computing, in fact it is finding its relevance at an ever increasing rate. As it should, because Free software as a concept has never been more relevant to society as a whole, where computing acts in every corner of our lives. Edited on 11/07/2018 10:14.

Don't change these.
