Lisp is useless

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-18 14:42

Why do you /prog/ and /g/ faggots always recommend this? ``Read SICP'' is a just a bad meme, not a good choice for beginners. Even MIT dropped Lisp for its CS courses. Good luck finding a job with unhirable shit like Lisp, Haskell, or just straight up C. No one cares about that boomer shit.

Learn Django or Node. Embrace Java, despite what you might think of it, simply because it's hirable. Learn Python. Learn JavaScript and a couple frameworks.

Lisp is the neckbeard language for people who don't actually do anything with programming other than shitposting on programming boards.

I am a bit confused by your post. What is your issue exactly? SICP? Lisp? Functional programming? Languages that are not so popular in indian coding jobs? What?

First of all, SICP is an incredibly amazing book: it contains a lot of information that helps you open up your mind to the world of magic while at the same time being extremely easy that even a brainlet like >>1-san could understand. Secondly SICP introduces you to multiple concepts and paradigms other than FP that are independent of the language that you use.

So please, do explain your issue a bit more.
Have a downvote.

You're so entrenched in your beliefs that your brain is incapable of understanding any opposing views. You're just like a liberal in that regard.

Lisp is not a hirable language. You think people just study programming for fun? No, it's a career. If you want to stick to writing useless research papers in academia, use whatever language you want. But in the real world, you need to keep up with industry demands.

Help me understand then if you please. I am open to accepting new ideas.

Lisp is not a hirable language
Sure, but is your issue with SICP or with Lisp? I think that this is still unclear.

You're so entrenched in your beliefs that [...]

The same could be said about your stupid OP, >>1-kun

Plenty of job listings around me for Java or full stack web development. Lisp? Not so much.

>>1 SICP is very easy to get. Do M-x-package-list-packages in your favorite editor. Do S-S, type sicp. Type i. And hit x. After that do a M-x-butterfly and find peace. :-)

It depends on one's intentions. Lisp is useful in certain niche cases; if working in engineering and such, AutoCAD is programmable using Lisp routines. This is one of a number of very specific but powerful implementations of Lisp for engineering, research, and more.
If you're not interested in these fields, and instead prefer to work in mainstream web development, then generally learning Lisp will not be of practical interest beyond developing a deep understanding of functional languages which may be transferable in your attitude to other languages. boomer privilege: being able to study a useless language because you're already tenured or have a pension or some shit

being a muh lennial means you have to do whatever the market demands, because you're considered disposable and replaceable

Not as useless as these dubs.

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-21 8:55

people who learn lisp only do so after already knowing the other languages. obviously no one is going to pay you to write in a dead unsupported language.

SICP is sort of like Aesop's Fables for programmers. It is rudimentary information that shapes the way you think about approaching solving problems using a programming language.

Also, SICP is not ``about'' LISP; rather, it is about computational processes, the abstract beings that inhabit computers.

If SICP isn't about LISP where is the C edition for imperative shitlords?

Functional thinking doesn't fare well in an OOP world.

SICP isn’t functional just because it preaches recursion.
