Why do people look down on web developers?

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-29 21:38

I'm a web developer and I'm annoyed at how people who primarily do desktop development think they're better than me. I know shit like C++ and Java too, you know.

There is literally nothing wrong with being a web developer.

Pop-ups? What year is it? Unless you mean modals/overlay/interstitial type ads? But it's within the same tab.
Targeted banner ads and promoted posts are all the rage these days.
Tracking and ads are what you have to deal with for free content. But paywalling content doesn't usually work very well.
Social media is important. We're all increasingly connected now, whether you like it or not. Specific platforms will come and go. But even though Facebook and Twitter will fall eventually, some other new platforms will replace them.

Also, tracking and ads aren't an inherently web-based phenomena. You'll see ads outside on billboards, or tracking in the form of cameras pretty much everywhere you go.

Benefits of web include always delivering the newest version of your software, instead of having users cling to ancient versions with security and compatibility issues. It's easy to get someone to visit a website, but good luck getting a non-technical person to install something, especially if it's just for a one-off purpose.

The web is the epitome of write once, run anywhere. You can even use wrappers like Electron or React Native to make actual desktop clients from web apps. What's not to like? Performance? Developer time is more important than CPU time. We could take a million years to write something in a lower level language, or just come up with super quick prototypes using a full web stack that might not be optimal for speed. But we're not on 386s anymore, most computers can deal with it.

Additionally, I've never enjoyed traditional GUI frameworks, but coming up with a UI with HTML and CSS is a breeze.

Besides, a lot of your criticisms are about specific implementations of web development, not the tech itself. But then again, let's say you're in favor of embedded systems. Fighter jets that bomb and kill people run QNX, a proprietary Unix-based RTOS. Are OS developers and embedded systems programmers responsible for what it's used for?
