Why do people look down on web developers?

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-29 21:38

I'm a web developer and I'm annoyed at how people who primarily do desktop development think they're better than me. I know shit like C++ and Java too, you know.

There is literally nothing wrong with being a web developer.

There is literally nothing wrong with being a web developer.

They're the ones creating sites filled with popups, ads, tracking bullshit, "social media" rubbish, and all kinds of other offensive horrors.

They're also the ones trying to take control of browsers away from the users.

Pop-ups? What year is it? Unless you mean modals/overlay/interstitial type ads? But it's within the same tab.
Targeted banner ads and promoted posts are all the rage these days.
Tracking and ads are what you have to deal with for free content. But paywalling content doesn't usually work very well.
Social media is important. We're all increasingly connected now, whether you like it or not. Specific platforms will come and go. But even though Facebook and Twitter will fall eventually, some other new platforms will replace them.

Also, tracking and ads aren't an inherently web-based phenomena. You'll see ads outside on billboards, or tracking in the form of cameras pretty much everywhere you go.

Benefits of web include always delivering the newest version of your software, instead of having users cling to ancient versions with security and compatibility issues. It's easy to get someone to visit a website, but good luck getting a non-technical person to install something, especially if it's just for a one-off purpose.

The web is the epitome of write once, run anywhere. You can even use wrappers like Electron or React Native to make actual desktop clients from web apps. What's not to like? Performance? Developer time is more important than CPU time. We could take a million years to write something in a lower level language, or just come up with super quick prototypes using a full web stack that might not be optimal for speed. But we're not on 386s anymore, most computers can deal with it.

Additionally, I've never enjoyed traditional GUI frameworks, but coming up with a UI with HTML and CSS is a breeze.

Besides, a lot of your criticisms are about specific implementations of web development, not the tech itself. But then again, let's say you're in favor of embedded systems. Fighter jets that bomb and kill people run QNX, a proprietary Unix-based RTOS. Are OS developers and embedded systems programmers responsible for what it's used for?

Developer time is more important than CPU time

Bull-fucking-shit. Think about that the next time you get frustrated that your development tools are bloated beyond reason and slow as molasses.

In other words... FUCK YOU AND DIE IN A FIRE!!!!

You know what is wrong with webdev? That every single website is now using js with react and takes 10 days to render - and after it renders it uses half of my ram, rendering me unable to start a game without killing the browser first (trying to close it normally takes ages). You would think that the solution would be to disable js, but no, even for a text article to render it needs js for some reason.

I know shit like C++ and Java too, you know
You talk as if these are good things.

Free content made by hobbyists is better anyway, higher quality content, no ads, nor paywalls.

Developer time is more important than CPU time
Why are you using JS then? It ruins both developer time and CPU time. If you wanted to save time you would use a language with a proper type system - which would, as a side effect, improve the CPU time.

Not again with this shit, don't come with the "boohoo us corporations have it like so hard??" like the company you're working for has no money to make a decent product. Everyone who spews this bullshit excuse is just a kike trying to cut corners somewhere.

yeah I'm totally gonna use lisp in a browser (or whatever other boomer language /prog/ is into these days)

oh wait, no

people don't use JS because of its type system or paradigm or inheritance or some shit

people use it because you can run it in a browser

>>7
buddy, everyday web developers aren't out there to reinvent the wheel or recreate tools
I'm just here to make presentable products, even if my tools could theoretically be more optimized
you don't need to do something perfectly, just well enough
developer time is expensive, so trying to optimize everything means higher cost, but the whole point of this industry is to make money, so that'd be self-defeating

just let the open source autists waste all their free time developing better stuff so that we can benefit from using it without having to work for free Edited on 30/07/2018 02:57.

omnipresent XSS giving script kiddies, Eastern European carders and government agencies RCE on your're are machine - much easier to exploit than buffer overflows https://blog.doyensec.com/2017/08/03/electron-framework-security.html

do you even know what you are talking about? The only lisp with an ok type system is typed racket, and it's still shit. I am not suggesting that you use lisp.

people use it because you can run it in a browser
It so happens that you can compile a lot languages to js or web assembly trivially, even haskell.

Javascript

That's why

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-30 20:14

If you don't do full stack all the way from an OS you wrote yourself when you were 12 in C, built using your own C compiler you wrote when you were 10, with your own libraries and webserver, and own scripting language, and your own enterprise webframework, then you're pretty much a low-grade plebcudder.

Reinventing the wheel for no reason is just mental masturbation and serves no purpose other than to waste time you could have been solving higher-level issues instead.

Why did that PLEB buy a car at the dealership when he could have spent years building his own from scratch? Hmmm, maybe because it's more convenient?

it’s easier to solve boring, primitive problems that have already been solved hundreds of thousands of times before you than to solve something completely new and interesting.

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-31 2:05

sometimes, the problem is just making money, not solving cool tech and math stuff

and sometimes, the way to get that money is to be a web developer who works on sites with articles like ``Top 5 Avocados to Shove up Your Ass''

your're are problem isn't going to car dealership instead of making car. it is going to car dealership instead of cdr dealership

The same reason why people look down on cucks.

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-31 9:33

The chad javascript cuck vs the virgin C programmer.

chad and cuck at the same time?
really makes you think

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-31 16:28

Acshually, there isn't any contradiction(Chads are not immune from cucking), but Chad can afford being cucked by some of his hoes. The real cucks are loyal husbands fixated on one woman. If she cucks them, their life is ruined. If she cucks a Chad, Chad dumps and/or beats her into a coma dependent on how he feels.

that's not how relationships work, also check my dubs

Name: Anonymous 2018-07-31 21:59

Chads get married and become cucks too. No one is safe from being cucked (unless you're black).

Hmmm, that would have been a great argument in OJ Simpson's trial

Don't change these.
