Man, everything about GNU is becoming outdated. The website, the philosophy, the tech, lack of social media, being all about privacy to the point of opting out of modern tech... they're sealing their own fate.

lack of social media
I don't get the point of social media

to be a normie, to network with people, to make friends and professional acquaintances who can hire you, and to fuck random strangers

even proto-social media stuff like discussion boards are similar, just not as modernized

you're talking to me and other people on this board, you're not going full /innawoods/ or anything

to network with people
Even if you have a facebook account you are not going to make a friend request to every random dude online, and even if you do and they accept you it does not mean that you will ever talk with them.

you're talking to me and other people on this board, you're not going full /innawoods/ or anything
Because we share a common interest. This is not the case in say facebook if you do not like football or pop culture.

you are not going to make a friend request to every random dude online
here's how it works
you meet someone in person -- work, meetup.com, etc.
then you add them on facebook
then you get to know them better -- you might only see them in person a couple times a month, which isn't enough to know them well
but if you add them on snapchat, instagram, twitter, facebook, etc then you will get to know them even when you don't hang out in real life
and I have met random people on meetup, eventbrite, craigslist, and linkedin
this is how people socialize and network these days
recruiters contact you and say they want to meet up and get coffee to discuss jobs, but it's not just jobs -- you can make friends and professional acquaintances this way too (unless you live in a rural area)
also I've made friends from twitter, they can also follow you on github, or you make a slack team or discord server too
if you do not like football or pop culture
none of my social media is about football or pop culture

How will you get to know them if you do not talk with them?

Have you tried going outside instead? Or having a hobby?
Why would you want to meet random people?

You smell like a coder.

messages -- comment on their IG uploads, tweets, etc. or even DM them
modern socialization and friendship is a combination of social media and in-person
the social media interaction supplement the less frequent in-person stuff

How fitting for you to use an obsolete technology and be punished for it.

what's pathetic about keeping up with modern technology?

for a programming board, people sure are low-tech here

technology isn't just CPUs and RAM and C++, it's phones and social media and apps now too

get with the times
