I wrote this as a reply to another answer below, but I might as well paste it as an answer as well. Because it annoys me to see people basically answer "they don't" or blame it on bad handling, which is simply not correct. One person even goes so far as to say the cables are excellent, which is one of the absolutely last words I'd use to describe them, right between the descriptions "swell" and "made of cheese".
My home simply begs to differ. I buy only Apple original cables and have done so since the iPhone 3. I am now on iPhone 12 Pro. Apple's lightning cables suck the balls of a giant goat. Seriously, we have no other cables fail on us so frequently and it would be devastating to learn how much money we have spent on those crap cables over the years. Right now we have about twelve (12) iPhone charger cables in our home, all of which were purchased in the last two years. Three (3!) of them are still working (although one of them only works in one position, so you have to turn it upside-down if it doesn't work). I will repeat that: 3.
All of these lightning cables have been treated royally and are the most pampered objects in the house, and they all look pristine and shiny new. We do all but bow to them and serve them strawberry champagne. To no avail. They just stop working, and no cleaning, positions or pep talks help.
As a professional musician, I work with cables and chargers on a daily basis. I have cables in use that are still working after 39 years of heavy wear and tear, most of them waaaaay cheaper than the lightning cable, I might add. And hey, I can still charge my old iPhone 3 and the old iPods, since those old charger cables still work. And same goes for all the MacBook chargers (I have 8 MacBooks and MacBook Pros with chargers in my house). The only MacBook charger cable that I've lost was one that exploded as it was inserted in a venue socket that was likely faulty.
So, Apple lightning cables, good cables? Not a chance. Get real. We use up a solid 5–10 every year, minimum. Not one is lost to twisting, breaking, water or other wear and tear damage. They just give up. And I have no idea why. Which kind of sucks since I'm thereby not answering this question. I can't. I am wondering the same thing.
How I found this thread? I googled "Why do my Apple iPhone charging cables always stop working?" and I'm still waiting for a good answer. "They are excellent" is simply not an answer that I find remotely acceptable. They are the Worst. Cables. I. Have. Ever. Used.

Apple invented Lightning for greed. Cleverly it adds an unnecessary chip within the connector whose connections break quickly, so they can extort money repeatedly. MFi makes 3rd-party vendors pay Apple to be able to sell cables. Oh the genius of Jobs.
In the decades since USB came into existence I have NEVER had a USB cable fail, through an endless succession of tower PCs, laptops, tablets, phones, external disks, mice, keyboard. NEVER a problem. Likewise with HDMI.
Last year I bought 3 USB-to-Lightning adapters. Just shells with a plug at one end and socket at the other, both wired to a chip. No cables to fray or damage by pulling. A safe bet.
I used them regularly, recharging an iPod Touch and an iPhone SE running iOS 11. Then I upgraded to iOS 12. At first everything was ok, ie for a week they both charged without any problems.
Today the adapters all suddenly stopped functioning. The chargers I use are ok, I verified that. But the Apple cable that came with my iPhone works. Whether I use Apple’s charger or not.
I am reminded of why I shunned Apple products for years. I only bought an iPhone because there were apps I could not get for Windows 10 Mobile. I miss the latter’s AMOLED displays, live tiles, and fuss-free Micro-USB.
I am now looking for a source of reliable cables at a reasonable price to fix a problem that should not exist. The concept of cables that wear out in months BY DESIGN is bizarre and alien to me. It amounts to fraud.

I’m surprised by the lack of quality answers here. I have six Apple devices and have owned at least one since 2010. It is obvious that lightening cables don’t fail because of physical damage or normal wear and tear but because Apple’s updates render the chip in these cables obsolete. Cheap cables bought on Amazon and made in China will last about six months. This pack cost me about $10.

the Apple brand might be better for connection reliability, but they are so fragile that they end up fraying within a couple of weeks.
I have been slapping duct tape on the fray-susceptible spot, but there’s got to be a better way to make them last longer.
Apple seems to have an added responsibility to reduce waste and plastics consumption in out climate changing environment, so this issue is worse than faulty product designed to be obsolete and unreliable for licensed manufacturing replacement.

This is all just my opinion and I am not recommending you to follow what you're about to read as I am no expert. The following may void any warranties, ruin a device or even cause injury or death. My writing may not solve your issue as it did for me. Attempt at your own risk.
Firstly, make sure that you are using a lightning cable licensed to work with an iPhone. Look for the Made for iPhone, iPad, iPod (MFi) logo on the product box to ensure you are buying a top quality product. I would not recommend using a cheap sketchy made in China cable as it may potentially ruin your device or even cause a fire.
Secondly, check to see if your cable has a burnout mark on the part that goes into the lightning port. I sometimes try to clean off the black mark so that the cable can have a better contact with the device. I intentionally left out cleaning procedures because the cable is not made to be cleaned. (The next two photos are generic illustrations I made for this Quora answer and will be different from yours.)
Lastly, a lot of people do not do this and are probably unaware of the issue existing. Sometimes your iPhone’s, iPod’s, or AirPod case’s lighting port can become jammed and caked with pocket lint and other crud! Take a peek into the lightning port to see if you see lint preventing your cable from completely sliding in. Below is a generic illustration of my AirPod case with make believe crud drawn in. I usually (and I am not telling you to do this) turn my iPhone off to prevent short circuit and electrical shock while extracting the lint. I use a thin sewing needle to scrape out the crud form the port. I also avoid touching the metal nodes inside of the port to prevent damage and electrical shock. This is not recommenced but it works for me. A safer way to clean the port would probably be to use compressed air to blow out the lint.
These things worked for me but may not work for you, depending on your situation. I apologize that your cables are not lasting long. I have yet to run into issues with a MFi lightning cable. Lightning cables are not made like the old 30-pin cables that came with the older iPhones. Good luck and I hope you can solve your issue!

I’ve found that when I’m using my iPhone while I’m charging it, that my cables tend to break faster. I’ve tried the woven cloth varieties, along with the vinyl jacketed types and all fail fast when I’m using my phone, but tend to last longer when the phone is just sitting flat and charging. This is due to all the motion at the point the cable enters the lightning connector. Minimizing that motion will keep the very thin (too thin?) internal wires attached as they should be for longer. I’d pay double for a truly heavy duty lightning cable that would last a year while using the iPhone connected to the charge cable.

Lightning is a smart connector.
You can turn it round, plug it back in and it still works. This magic happens because there is smart hardware which re-allocates the pins dynamically.
Apple licence this smart hardware, and charge money to manufacturers. This makes official connectors more expensive.
The unlicenced l knock-off products, have guessed / reverse engineered some of the functions, and if you are lucky they might work as charging cables. (and if you are unlucky they will burst into flames).

3rd party cables do not have the specific tolerances for the idevices. The blueprint is kept secret, so 3rd parties have to guess, which causes each cable to be a little different from apples official cables.
Over time, the cables wear out and the charging stops working. This is usually caused by low quality assurance, and bad testing. My recommendation is to buy from certified retailers like Amazon basics. They more frequently than not, have better quality, longer lasting cables than Chinese branded ones.
I once bought a pack of 5. 4 of which stopped working after the 1st week..

Depending on the cable, I find the cheap ones the micro-usb plug stops making proper contact within a few months- expensive cords- maybe up to a year- sometimes…
The higher the current the less time the micro-usb plug lasts (I normally find the plug is the issue rather than actual broken wires in most cases- checking with a multimeter shows continuity, but when inserted into the phone (or my vape, which is hell on the charging cords as it’s charging current is about twice that of my phone) it won’t charge- for a while it will by ‘propping’ the plug on something so its angled into the socket- but that's always a sign to order a new one…
Interestingly it’s never the larger USB-A plug at the PSU end, but the micro-usb at the phone/vape end that’s the issue… those tiny contacts just aren’t up to the job imho

You don’t specify which type of iPhone it is, so it’s not clear if this is an active or passive cable.
An iPhone will attempt to negotiate a high current draw in order to charge substantially faster — up to 4X faster than it would otherwise be able to charge.
The USB standard doesn’t support charging at a higher current draw, so in order to do this, it negotiates the current draw between the wall wart (the USB charger brick into which the cable is plugged, and which is plugged into the wall) and the iPhone.
I personally have a number of power outlets with USB ports which incorporate charging chips licensed from Apple — Apple actually charges cost on these chips to manufacturers for this type of use; they charge a premium to people who want to make wall warts. They don’t provide the USB port chips that are in their computers for use in USB Downstream Charging Ports to third parties.
The upshot of this is that, if it’s not an Apple device, it’s going to run a much lower current draw. If the device is on — particularly iPads, but also the large iPhones, if the backlight is turned up — will draw power faster than the default USB standard can supply it.
So they pop this warning. You acknowledge the warning, and the charging circuit will shunt and draw power from there — and charge, if there’s anything left over, which there might be, if you’ve killed everything running in the background, have good cellular signal strength (if it’s a cellular device, since the fewer bars, the more power the iPhone will draw to talk to the cell tower).
Or, if there was a warning, it might not charge, it might just stay on battery power, if all your radios (Cell, WiFi, Bluetooth) are on and the backlight is lit up brightly.
There’s no option for “running as much as you can off wall power, and get the rest from the battery” or for “run off battery, and charge as much as you can, even though the device is depleting the battery faster than it’s recharging”.
That’s with a straight USB-to-”dumb”-docking cable.
In the Thunderbolt case, things are different. They’re different because the cable is active, as in it has powered electronics in it.
If it’s not an MFI certified cable — that’s one that’s been certified by Apple as using chips licensed from Apple), then it’s going to have at least one chip in it, possibly two.
Then there’s a problem.
Because the iPhone (or whatever) talks to the cable. Then the cable talks to the wall wart. Then the wall wart talks back to the cable. Then the cable talks to the device.
In other words: the cable needs to be able to talk about Apple’s manufacturer extensions to the USB charging standard — which show up as a different USB device profile, actually, since the USB folks didn’t think to add a “vendor option negotiation area” to the power profiles for the three types of USB power providers.
So the cable needs to be able to pretend to be an Apple cable to the iPhone (or whatever), then it needs to pretend to be an Apple cable of that type to the wall wart, which has to be able to pretend to be an Apple charger, to the cable.
Everyone has to talk to everyone else.
So if the thing pretends to be an Apple cable for a regular profile, but then not for the power profiles … it can’t negotiate on behalf of the device to the USB wall wart to get a higher current draw, more than the minimum current that you are allowed to pull off any upstream USB port.
And that’s definitely not enough to charge a device like an iPhone.
So it pops the little message, and then it refuses to charge.
Can I guess that you are perhaps a wall wart manufacturer or a cable manufacturer, trying to not have to license the Apple chips, and pay the Apple fees, and then pocket the difference of the licensing fee, and make a tidy profit?
If not, then it appears you bought a cable, wall wart, or both from one.
This is why Apple rails against so-called “counterfeit chargers”: cutting corners in order to increase per unit profitability, at the expense of actually providing the same features provided by actual Apple products.

I used all sort of cables: originals, third party quality cables and cheap crap with my 5s. I’m currently using a 3 meters long quality cable at home and a standard length cheap copy in the car. Both are from Ebay.
All worked/is working fine, never had any issues with the cable operation. They work just like a standard micro USB cable, there aren’t many things which could go wrong. Longevity is another issue, cheap cables tend to break quite soon. Not necessarily the cable what breaks, but the extremely bad quality manual soldering between the cable and the small PCB holding the electronics inside the USB connector case. It can be repaired (I did), but it’s usually not worth the effort.
Btw, cable electronics. It’s simple, two SOT-23 packaged devices and some passives. There is no circuitry in the cable to switch lines according to the orientation, and this is not needed either: the pinout is symmetric. Rotating it by 180 degrees does not matter. Just checked with a multimeter. I guess the circuitry has something to do with voltage control or ESD protection etc., but of course it cannot be excluded that one of the integrated circuits is an EEPROM containing the serial number.
Of course I can imagine that there are bad batches out there. I remember at the advent of USB 2.0 there were cables reported which did not work properly at high speed. (480 Mbps) I’ve never seen such a cable myself though

Because they are mass-produced items that are made with the minimum of components in order to maximise the profit on those items. Failure of a single component (often a capacitor) will render the unit non-functional, and of course when you’re making thousands of these items there will be a proportion of bad capacitors on the production line that will either make the units dead-on-arrival, or will be marginally functional such that over time (under stress and heat) the components will fail before the design lifetime of the power supply.
Often testing of electronic items is done by testing a random sample of the production line output, rather than test each unit. You can show statistically that this approach identifies major production problems (e.g. a whole batch of bad capacitors), but inevitably it means that some bad or marginal units will make it into the field.
Where I live (in the EU), one year is the minimum warranty time on electronic goods, so a unit that fails after 6 months should be cheerfully replaced.

We’ve already heard from those dirty mouths accusations of chemical weapons use and all kinds of lies that never matched reality.
ASSAD was never interested in letting the International Monetary Fund humiliate his country, nor in allowing the private infrastructure of criminals from Arab monarchies to take root on Syrian soil, and, most importantly, he didn’t belong to a confession that produces extremists willing to kill others for foreign interests, supposedly because of “wrong belief” or “wrong way of believing.”
Those people gathered there just to give the appearance of doing something, when in fact nothing is being done. Alawites can’t be used for dirty purposes, and no one is interested in keeping them on a leash, so they are left to suffer without much attention from the global community.
If Assad had worked in the interest of the aforementioned gangs, he could have “used” chemical weapons, imprisoned whoever he wanted, and more. He could have, as is still done in Saudi Arabia, taken a whip in hand and physically punished women in public squares. No one would have paid attention, as long as he bowed to those who wanted to impose their needs and interests on him.

@jkflipflop98 2 years ago There's another video here that actually did figure it out. Wherever you find this andesite you also usually find sulfur deposits. So basically they'd mine and refine as best they could a bunch of sulfur. Then once the rocks were roughly cut to be the right shape, they'd line all the spaces between the stones with sulfur as they set them in place, and then after the stones were set they'd light off the sulfur and it would get hot enough to slightly melt the stone. they'd literally smoosh the soft stone together into a perfect fit.
The smoking gun is that there's multiple places in every site where they messed it up and put too much sulfur. You can see where rocks literally melted into lava and started running as liquid before hardening again.

They are so greedy though, that rather than roll back feminism, they want us to accept it and even desire it. They want to make bad and vapid female behavior seem endearing. Ironically, such displays from men will not fool men, but women, who will think this behavior is not only tolerable but desirable.
These women will then think that men who don't like it are somehow freaks. The truth is, it's the married men who are abnormal. They are a minority of men -- as are men desiring relationships and men who have ever been in a relationship.
The battle is over, they won their war on men and captured all the women. But in winning this battle, the state has lost the war.
In a sense, the state is like the cuckold husband and Will Smith, except instead of a cheating unfaithful wife, what they have are armies upon armies of disloyal men -- refusing to love and obey the state. Refusing to submit to the state.
We, free men, want something else. Something this state, and the women it has created, cannot offer us. The memes are amusing, and they're powerful forms of behavioural/societal modification. Ultimately though, there is a physical war that will need to be won -- after the state completely collapses.

They would dress up as stereotypical 50s "home makers", who themselves were ironically cosplayers of a bygone era. With divorces burning through many relationships in the great depression, this form of cosplay was required to reel men back into society after the devastation of WW2.
It largely worked and the boomer generation was born, with very high fertility rates.
Could it work again in the 2020s? Absolutely not. It's not the same time. Let's summarize why.
As boomers were born, dark clouds were already on the horizon, "second wave feminism" was in play, with the work of the homosexual feminist Simone de Beauvoir taking its toll on women's psyche who were used by the state in the workforce of WW2. The capitalist states realized they could undermine the power of the worker by forcing women into the workforce, doubling it and thus halving wages. So, masculinization of women was set in motion and the CIA got directly involved, using Gloria Steinem to promote feminism in all forms of media, even video games at one point in time!
The regime and the CIA realized the immense power it could exercise over men by spreading feminism and implementing more state control over marriage and female-male interaction. From this point on, there was a full commitment into destroying the male-female relationship and replacing it with a relationship with the state:
- Servitude to the state for men, who are provided resources. - Complete power for women from the state, who are provisioned the roles formerly belonging to their husbands, including financial execution of the latter.
The degeneracy of the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair of 1969 resulting in the "sexual revolution" was another key victory for the state, which eventually eliminated almost all available virgin women. Virginity upon marriage is the ultimate and one-time form of submission which was the cornerstone of all marriages, alongside the lifelong commitment it entailed.
What truly sealed the fate of society was the combination (and escalation) of all these factors and the escalation of no-fault divorce and the family court system which is designed to further destroy men and render them slaves through massively unfair alimony and child support payments.
Research conducted by the institute of family studies has shown that the rate of divorce increases with the number of acts of fornication, with virginity being the safest marriage for men. The majority of men will not expend time with women they do not intend to remain with. It's a huge effort overall and creates a massive heart ache should it fail. As such, with the statistics so skewed, intelligent and street wise men are avoiding non-virgins for marriage. The rest are avoiding women with a "high body count".
The problem is the majority of women in the west lose their virginity around the age of 14 -- and society has largely demonized the concept of virginity and encouraged women to engage in as much sexual activity during their youth as possible. In general, the older the woman, the more sexual activity she has been through. Younger women have a lot of choices and are still extremely desirable but are small in number due to collapsing birth rates!
Due to the explosion in dating apps and the destruction of meeting places in real life, as well as the healthy society attached to them, these young women are more likely to be shared by a few men (less than 5% of society), meaning the majority of men will grow older without ever having the women they desire at their prime. Statistics show a catastrophic rise indicating this also:
As such, these desirable younger women are unlikely to engage in the tradwife or born again virgin cosplay.
Only older women do! These haggard (aka "post-wall") women of the west try to counter this dynamic by shaming men into marrying them. They created a meme called the "age gap" which is taken as a moral sin by liberals already (it's of course complete feminist nonsense, but this is side point.) They are of course at an age that makes them extremely undesirable for creation of a family -- but some men would gladly use them for temporary highly sinful vices.
This doesn't help the state -- they need men to commit to these women, create a family and have a stake in society that they will maintain either through divorce servitude or continued service in the economy and later as soldiers in the battlefield.
So, rather than change the workplace dynamics of women, no-fault divorce, feminism and more, they want to change the behaviour of men. They want to change what men desire. In fact, the Australian regime recently opened an entire department to do so, which I will mention soon!
What they want in men is what they achieved in women through feminism: Homosexuality. They want to create the kind of man that would accept their large swathes of born again virgins and "tradwives" and they intend to do this through intense homosexual psychological operations.
And I'm going to explain exactly what they want to turn you into: a gay cuckold.

They seriously think cosplay and memes can reel them in -- this is insanity. Males and females have different traits and purposes for each other, and when they are mentally and physically healthy, fit like a glove and hand forged in heaven.

Feminism is a kind of misnomer for what we're dealing with here, it's actually masculinisation of women, i.e. turning women into men in mind, lifestyle, goals and actions. They know something is wrong, as their desires contradict their conditioning -- i.e. ego-dystonic -- but their conditioning is impossible to escape.

It's so shameful to submit isn't it? Imagine being a man and submitting to another man. Actually we do it all the time. Ironically, women also must submit to the state and their employers but have been conditioned to see submission to the man they supposedly love as shameful, even psychotic/sadistic.
Submission must only be an act, a kind of sardonic foreplay -- purely for the woman's own pleasure. This tends to degenerate where women desire submission from their men, lose all attraction to them when their true nature kicks out the dissonance, and breaks the relationship. You see this the moment when women force their men into extremely feminine roles. A homosexual act by the man, who has submitted to not only his wife, but the state that empowers (thus controls) her.
In my state in Australia (NSW), feminists have managed to pass an even more radical law: measures against coercive control. This is an extremely ambiguous crime that is defined as any kind of coercive behavior to control a woman in a relationship. This includes, but is not limited to, giving your wife the stink eye for getting pregnant with another man's child. You can be imprisoned if the mere stare into your woman's eye is enough to make her feel you're being coercive. You are to exercise no control, she is never to submit to you. Only the state -- and her employer, along with the small percentage of men who are beyond control and the law.
This is in addition to the previous move to assign a ministry to change men's behaviour. This is also known as brainwashing.
These are extreme examples but they demonstrate the underlying goal -- the state is the only husband of the wife, along with men above the law. You, the "husband", are essentially a cuckold. This is an extremely homosexual kink, but the majority of married men are coerced into it. They usually settled -- and eventually their wives lost respect for them (because they married a rat like her) -- and divorced them.
