Cudder is so busy because

Name: Anonymous 2014-12-10 14:44

writing in assembly is the most unproductive, slow and quickly-bitrotting way to program.

Has Cudder ever delivered something?
I don't remember he ever finishing a single project.

Has Cudder ever delivered anything?
I don't remember him ever finishing a single project.

The second correction is fine; the first correction is nitpicking since "something" is just as valid as "anything."

Also, great contribution to the thread.

Thanks for teaching me! I won't make these mistakes again.

"Something" and "anything" are not equivalent. The former is used in affirmative statements, the latter is used in questions and negations. Here are some examples:

I think I saw something move.
Did you see anything?
Nope, on second thought, I didn't see anything.

Yes, I understand how important grammar is, thanks.

Thanks for the teaching of the grammar!
The mistakes of not happening in the tomorrow maybe.

I didn't say they were equivalent, I said it was also valid.

"Something" certainly can be used in questions. Have you never heard any of the following constructions used?

Is there something I can do for you?
Did he own something of value?

I'll grant you it's less common for "something" to be used in negation. There really *is* no real distinguishing something and anything. It isn't a definitive "use something here, anything there". The difference depends on context. Anything is more infinite, while something is more limited.

Besides, I will always takes a descriptivist approach.

Name: Anonymous 2014-12-10 16:23

Is there anything I can do for you?
Did he own anything of value?

Now it's correct.

Also some advice for the future: do not make mistakes just because someone else makes them. Whenever in doubt, learn the right way, and use it exclusively.

"Something" and "anything" mean similar things when asking a question, but they're still not quite the same. Asking those particular questions with "something" implies that there's one particular favor to do, or one particular item of value that the guy owned. In other words, you're suggesting that you know specific details about the answer you expect to get. "Anything" is certainly more neutral in both cases, but that's not the same as being more correct.

I already said that something and anything both refer to different quantities and have different contexts. My point was that they are both valid, while he's suggesting only one is. Yes, "anything" is more neutral, but that doesn't mean "something" is incorrect in the context it was originally used in within this thread.

If you need ___ , just call me.
Both "anything" and "something" fit, with slightly different meanings, "something" sounds somewhat more reserved, I would use that but I correctly guessed author's prescriptivistic bullshit.

Yes, and here's a source that says "something" is acceptable when asking questions:

http://hubpages.com/hub/Grammar_Mishaps__Something_vs_Anything

You'll find that grammarians don't always agree with each other. That is merely one reason why I don't subscribe to prescriptivist rules. Are you also the same type of person who insists on using preposition fronting? Or using "shall" in the first person and "will" in the second and third?

Name: Anonymous 2014-12-10 17:38

No, I'm not.

Name: Anonymous 2014-12-10 17:44

Your initial sentence

Has Cudder ever delivered something?

matched all the rules for "anything" enumerated in this thread: you do not know any specific details about Cudder's supposed deliverings, and you would accept an infinite number of possibilities (because otherwise you would've narrowed your query, like "Has Cudder ever delivered something larger than 1 kLOC?"). By all criteria, you should have used "anything", so what are you bitching about?

I wasn't the person who said that. You're right, in a way, because I definitely wouldn't say "something" in this context, but I was able to understand the question regardless. If I can understand what the person is saying, then there isn't a big necessity to correct their grammar (the second instance was correct-worthy, though.) I'm arguing because the person who corrected him said that "anything" cannot be used in questions, and then corrected two perfectly valid questions that used it. Furthermore, it was just rude.

You have a lot of shit to do because you can't write programs fast. Because assembly is good only for writing tight loops, not large projects.

Cudder can't deliver anything because he is not midwife, nor is he a real woman and as such lacks a functional vagina to deliver a baby from.

If my memory stands correct, OOP vaginas lack the ability to call the baby function.
