Textboards are good practice in general for learning how to deal with basic skills such as file handling, user inputs, displaying data, and so on.

>>3,6 Is it insane to make one in C? I'm not that experienced yet and C is not the easiest language for string handling but I would love to write a C backend for a textboard. Did you use CGI? Or some framework like kore? Very curious, pls respond

I would like to write one in Lua when I can get a server running CGILua and mod.lua
>>28 Assemblers usually have extensive macro systems, so it can be easier to use than C/C++. The only problem with assembler is their non-portability. But that can be overcomed by an emulator.

I don't get how C is supposed to be unsafe. Just use pledge(2) and unveil(2), mever use unsafe functions like strcpy and run it through a static analysis to find potential bugs. Optionally stick to a very secure standard/style. Very unlikely to still have any vulnerabilities right?

C is unsafe that's why they use rust to programm spacecrafts
>>40 This. Not caring about the security of a boards users will lead to a 4chan tier website, where recaptcha helps google to log all posters. If you make a forum, make it secure. But please help me decide how to make it secure. Is C unironically the most secure option if I stick to a secure style and run it through a static analysis?
A C based system would need to process HTTP requests, do url-encoding, translate/filter HTML entities (&) and all the stuff web technologies have builtin. Not to mention heavy-duty string processing. Don't use C... Even if most skilled with it. Will probably use a database (though flat-files aren't unheard of).
why would anyone use the fs for a textboard just use a sql db jesus christ

I've made a few textboards. In fact, my first project was a textboard back in 1999. The last textboard I made was just an API with no frontend. You send a request and depending on your "accept" header you could get a response back in JSON, YAML, XML, SEXP or plaintext, and I implemented protobuf before I lost interest. You could post anonymously or request a key to sign and edit your posts, create new boards, moderate or add/remove moderators to boards you've created, etc.
I used shiichan to host a local textboard for my thoughts.
