Is there anything /prog/ won't do for money?

I just turned down a "very nice" job offer from a FINANCIAL INSTITUTION, preferring instead to work far less hour for faaaar less pay in the field of THIRD WORLD DEVELOPMENT AID. Am I wrong?

Why are rms faggots so insufferable?

Name: Anonymous 2014-01-22 21:19

Just don't work for the government/military as they will spy on you with even more ease, they don't pay as well as private industry does, and they will make you program software to do bad things such as spy on michelle and finding a cute taliban boy to kidnap and rape

I'm not sure licensing matter much to me. Realistically; it's going to be very hard to find a position at a company in which you can maintain open source software (unless you know things I don't).

I could tolerate using INFERIOR TECHNOLOGIES such as PHP (so outdated) or MySQL (lol) but the though of making JAVA and .NET software for some cocksucker city-boys to rake in more bonuses just drives me nuts. There's supposed to be good money in ICT training too (if you can get in).. which is where I'm looking to go next.

Wait, you can get paid for that??

I work as a subcontractor for a system that will be shipped to exactly one client, along with the source code and the version control database, along with a license that is almost the WTFPL in spirit. It's not truly OSS in the sense that the client could then turn around and sell it under a proprietary license, but they probably won't (nobody aside from them could use it). If you look at it that way (and live in an area full of contracting), it's not so hard to get a job in `open source' software.

As someone who shamefully works for a financial institution, I find your example inspiring. My excuse is that I have a family to support, etc. and that I'm not actively doing evil, just not anything especially good. But if you don't have dependents, I think you are doing the right thing. Assuming development aid helps; I have no idea.

Sort of unrelated, but apparently working for porn or gambling sites makes it harder to get work in more legitimate industries. People don't want to work with a scumbag. Assuming that property lies on a scale, if you ever wind up with kids and you need money, you will probably find it easy to transfer to a higher paying job.

Wait, what's so bad about ``financial institutions''?

Three years ago I rejected working for a real-time face tracking (and non-rt face recognition) software for traffic cameras.

Nothing, like I said about ten words into my post, I'm not doing harm, but it's not like I'm saving the world either.

So what is the most honorable profession that's actually achievable? Corporate-sponsored Linux kernel dev? Shoestring payroll of the FSF? Contributor to *BSD? Six-figure ENTERPRISE developer who uses his riches to fund Free software bounties? Teacher? Tdavis? rms?

Aside from the Jew-funded Linux kernel dev and the contributor to *BSD, being a researcher in CS seems like a honorable profession to me.

As long as it's not about infinite compression, of course.

I'd rather suck dicks for money than write proprietary software.

Why not do both?

Name: Anonymous 2014-01-29 20:34

I'd rather suck dicks for free than use proprietary software.

Don't change these.
