Got Fired Because of Comments Style

Name: Anonymous 2016-03-15 11:01

My comments were in English and I refused to comment in russian (I have strong despise for that inferior language and cyrillic alphabet), so my russian boss has fired me. Did anyone had similar experience, getting bullied because of commenting practices?

Name: Anonymous 2016-03-15 11:55

Some practices suck but if it is the convention in your company, you should follow it. Though getting fired for doing something like that. Sounds like a shit company to work for anyway.

Really though, you should avoid commenting your code. Just write it so readable it doesn't need them.

Russians are mean and hard. What did you expect?

Russians are mean and hard.

Actually because of chronic alcoholism most Russian men have ED.

Russians are warm and cuddly and love poetry and music.

Russians are the world's best chess players and best ballet dancers.

The best novel ever written is Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

The entire world is greatly indebted to Russia and to Russians.

Without Russia and Russians, the world would be -- a far worse place.

Да здравствует Россия! Слава Богу из-за русских людей!

Commenting is the part of coding standard at most companies. I heard japanese companies also force programmers to use japanese language. So Japan sucks a large.

Really? I've never heard of such a company. The ubiquitous lack of documentation or legibility in the source code is one of my biggest hassles with software dev. Documentation and proper commenting takes time and money, which takes away from rushing the product out as cheaply and fast as possible. Since pinhead managers who have no desire to listen to technical advice are usually the ones that sign the contract, documentation is never a factor.

at that russian company they had several large PDF files, based on soviet NIOKR: http://wiki.itorum.ru/2011/04/standarty-na-vypolnenie-niokr/
these files regulated everything.

Those companies are either not sustainable or have a massive turn over of employees. They are shit companies.

Some hip methodologies, including spme Agile variants discourage comments of how the code works or how it does what it does. Five lines tp a function y'all, and allall that.

They suggest writing why the code does something instead of how. Seems fine to me.

It should be straightforward to see what the code is doing (i.e. how it works). What isn't always straightforward is the rationale why a particular system is like that. High level system documentation can explain a high level overview of why a system works that way. However, this won't explain why certain specific techniques were used in the code - these kinds of rationale should be documented within the source code.

When americans say "fired" they don't mean it literally.
Just my 2 cents for everyone reading.

Documentation is a snake oil, getting in the way. Source code is the best documentation and specification.

Haha, fuck off. I've done more in open source and interesting real non-silicon valley startups working on interesting software problems than you can ever dream of, and actively avoid the corporate shit.

And you know what? Lack of commenting means you're a shit programmer, full stop. You can pat yourself on the back all you want, but it's a sign that you've never worked on anything complex. Keep making Hello Worlds and Pong games all you want, but even though you're performing an act of programming, you'll never achieve what an actual Programmer does.

I don't have the code on me right now but it goes something like this:

int a =10;//asign a to 15

//fore lope
for( int i= 0 ;i< 9000; ++i) {

//clas DesignatedShittingStreet
public class DesignatedShittingStreet extends Curry{

Here's one I distinctly remember:

//check if country is usa
if(country.matches("America")||country.matches("U.S.A")||country.matches("US")||country.matches("USA")||country.matches("United States of America")||country.matches("United States")||country.matches("america")||country.matches("u.s.a")||country.matches("united states of america")||country.matches("united states")||country.matches("us")||country.matches("usa")) {

This isn't the exact code but it's similar.
