I'm working on two right now. one is a 2D survival RPG in a science fantasy/soft sci-fi setting (I'm a writer and designer there, but I don't have that much creative control because, well, it's someone else's pet project). the other is a fairly simple interactive fiction in a wolrd I came up with, but that one's on hold (and really, it will not be much - more of a way to introduce the setting and concepts behind it than a full-fledged vidya)

I think a much better idea would be prioritizing one project, otherwise you will complete neither, or they will come as subpar garbage. For example, main handicap in Spell of Mastery development was that I had to do several projects in one, both maintaining Symta and the game in it, and then also producing graphics. While opengamearts has a lot of assets, they aren't immediately usable, usually of low quality and have to be heavily edited, so one as well may just drawn something from scratch.

that's why the second project is on hold. the story is more or less this: I had a setting and some gameplay ideas, tried to make my'm am game twice but failed because I was the only person in the team to do shit. decided to scale back and make a IF-style thing in the same setting because it would be easy to do without the team, but then an opportunity came to work on someone else's project and make money in process. so the first one is what I'm actually doing right now, the second is what I hope to do in the future as a part of a bigger plan.

Well, Symta is far from being finished. It is still a prototype. There is currently no runtime support for allocating objects on malloc's heap, so I had to implement the heap in Symta itself, which isn't very robust. There are also no multi-threading, so AI turn movement would lock animation. That is usually not a problem, because AI handles only one unit per cycle, instead of coordinating all his units at once. The only coordinating AI does if when one unit sees enemy, it warns all nearby allies of the target, so player wont be able to take group of enemies one-by-one.

Stack-only allocation does work, but I have to pre-allocated all objects on stack in advance and there is no good way to free these objects, once they got compacted to root stack generations (each stack frame act as garbage collector's generation). Yet in some cases malloc just does precisely what is required, and cant be replaced with garbage collection or stack, without wasting resources, and at the same time malloc is limited only by computer's memory and address space. Although in some cases setting hard limits is useful: the game requires precisely 64 Mb RAM and not a byte more or less.

Well, I use system clock to time my game's cycles. By default each cycle is 1/60 of second (no reason going faster than framerate). But for invisible AI movements it gets full speed.

More bugfixes:
Version 0.7 changes:
- Fog/smoke breaking line of sight.
- A new spell to create mist, which allows sneaking around enemies.
- A ton more fixes to wall cutting graphics.
- Better detonate spell icon
- Fixed bug with AI player's units activating triggers intended for human player only.
- Fixed update of tiles inside fog of war.
- Minor optimization to tileset loading.
- Fixed burning of objects under the flame and burning platform objects, so they get properly replaced with ash and units on top of them fall down into flame.
- Fixed unit transparency, so thin objects, like obelisks near portal and windows, wont block vision.

- Fire, lightnings and explosions now burn down grass and other flamable objects, like trees and boxes.
- Focus on AI's spell target.

After the release of the demo of my game The Spell of Mastery, Russians started spreading rumors about me that I was crazy, schizophrenic, that my game allegedly contained viruses and stolen graphics.

This is, by the way, not his art, but sprites ripped out of all sorts of games in the last 10 years. He really sat like an autist, and for several years he deciphered the file formats in all kinds of retro games. He even somewhere the source code of his was sprite ripping utility. With stolen assets it is impossible to sell, of course. It is strange that Gabe was not banned him from Steam yet. -- Typical defamatory Russian comment

However, Russians failed to indicate where and what I've stolen. In fact, a part of the graphics was created by myself, another part was ordered to artists, or got from royalty free sites (such as itch.io and pixabay), and then edited for the needs of the game. Each file in my game contains the source of origin and the list of authors who participated in its creation.

I replied to such libel that I prohibit Russians from launching my game - and they will have no problems with viruses. However, I indeed enjoyed reverse engineering and modification of commercial video games, digging in an assembly code, and wrote a collection of graphics converters combined into one package - SAU (Sprite and Archive Utility). However, in my game, The Spell of Mastery, I did not take a pixel from these games. I was just inspired by general ideas from such classic games as Lords of Chaos, Spellcraft and XCOM.

Even more, I use my own programming language Symta, and it would be near impossible to interface it with say Unity or Cryengine, which is written in C/C++ -- a language that doesn't support runtime introspection, and requires special very complicated parser to produce bindings. It is also much easier to optimize the drawing of 2,000,000 sprites at fixed angle camera than the drawing of 2,000,000 polygonal meshes, especially if camera is free, as required by 3d games standards. Russians gave me absolutely no discount for having organic brain damage (resulting into autism, psychopathy and schizophrenia), no education in art or computer science, no budget and in addition of me being persecuted by Russia, with all my bank account being blocked for terrorism. No. I still must use Unreal, even if I know nothing about it or professional 3d modelling. Edited on 20/02/2019 21:16.

This oldman said that this was all for "important people, and he is a simple man," pointing to his rose hips and rotten apples.

On the other hand, babushkas and dedushkas have relatives who, on occasion, may beat me for trying to defraud their parents. A disabled person in ragged sweatpants with crutches on a bench in front of a commie-block, looked at me as if I'm a pedophile, said that he would not be able to walk to the bank and would not take a taxi, but he could call his friends and “they will open you an account for the rest of your life.”

Dirty construction workes with cheap beer bottles expressed greater interest in easy money, but were still scared of scammers. In the end, I got violent diarrhea, grabbing me by my stomach, likelly from a cheap cheburek I've eaten earlier, and I almost crapped myself in the middle of Kyiv, miraculously reaching the makeshift toilet behind the bushes. Having freed myself, I was forced to conclude that Ukкaine must be a rich country, since the Ukrainians do not need money so much that they do not know the word "bank".

- Dynamic Water.
- Cataclysm spell to flood your enemies and open a passage through waters. Finally you can play as Moses!
- Tornado spell, which scatters units and removes mist.
- Proper time system, instead of abstract turns. Now every turn models real life hour.
- Night time: every 8 turns out of 24 turns day, from 22:00 to 6:00. Undeads have more defence at night, while units without darkvision have reduced sight.
- Rain, which extinguishes flames in outdoor areas and prevents the use of fire spells, like firestorm and fireball. Units inside rain get -1 to sight.
- Proper wood bridge tile, instead wooden floor.
- Fixed fog sight bug, when cell below or above give units cant be accessed inside fog.
- Fixed bug with invalid empty check, affecting several spells and leading to potential crashes when one creature teleports into another creature.
- Fixed crash hiding drowning unit.

Once I had to use Bogdan bus for transportation. I sat near the driver, right next to a 7 years old boy. In these Bogdan buses they don't pronounce the stop titles and you have to explicitly ask driver (who doesn't understand English) to stop, where you need, so I have been looking into Google Maps all the time to avoid missing my destination. People were asking me to pass fare, I passed from those who spoke in Ukrainian "будь ласка", ignoring those who spoke Russian "пожалуйста". One man got annoyed that I ignored him and began to verbally assault me that I should give my sit to a person who will pass the fare, despite that the little kid did passed his fare instead of me.
